Electronic Omix ada distributor install

    Ok heres a report on the install with pics .
    The distributor is a direct drop in for the stock unit. I just removed the stock distributor (more on this later) . Slid the new distributor in , Reinstalled wires in the correct order and corrected the 2 wires to the coil. That simple ...... well not really .
    Problem #1 the stock distributor did not want to let go of its long time home . After getting the bolts out I had to take a 24" pipe wrench to break it lose and turn it untill I could turn it with a 18" pipe wrench while prying up on it with a tire iron after a few baths in PB blaster. 45 minutes later it got tired and let go. Pic of the old distribs defeat notice its battle scares .

    Small gripe #1 notice the new distrib doesnt have the O-ring the stock one did . But in my testing so far it doesnt need it .. so far Pic of the new unit and spare module.

    Problem #2 After wiring it all up I fired the jeep up but I had a really weak spark . I couldnt figure out why at the time , so I went back inside in defeat . After some thought I though maybe the ballast resistor was the cause . I asked the great ppl here and they agreed , so the next morning I bypassed it . That did it . Sparky noted that the F134 did not originally have a ballast resistor installed so if no one has ever put one in under your hood you not need worry about it. I set the timing by ear and took it for a test drive . Heres some pics of the new distributor installed.

    Ok I still not have set the timing correctly but the jeep seems to run better , especially after idling for long periods . As soon as I have a chance to pick up my timing light from my shop Im going to set the timing correctly . I also think it wouldn't be bad to open the spark plug gap a little more to around 40-45 .Over all Im happy with the purchase but I do have some other small gripes.
    2. The rotor button looks cheap / real flimsy metal ... hopefully I can find a non omix ada replacement.
    3. The wiring to the coil is standard foreign small gauge stuff with cheap ends, It looks like its easily replaceable though .

    A plus is the cap has a good seat on it so should be fairly water resistant . Im going to take the normal precautions anyway .

    I too just compleated the same install. I bought mine at Walcks for $140.00. Not sure if that's good or not but IMHO the service I get from those guys is good enough to make me not price shop them (too much).
    My install took less than thirty minutes and most of that time was spent pulling the new distributor back off to flip around the bracket. The bracket that came with the new unit was opposite that of the old unit (Picture taking a piece of paper and flipping it over on it's back). This put the adjustment screw towards the rear of the engine Vs. the front of the engine as it orgionally was. If I would have accepted that right off the bat I could have saved about twenty minutes.
    Once dialed in the Jeep runs better than I've ever heard it. Spark is extremely strong and I don't have that sputtering miss when it's cold. To me, it was worth every penny spent.

    Is there a point gap to open on the electronic ignition? I opened my plug gap slightly when I put in a new coil.
    The new distributor did'nt come with any other extra parts but it does have a parts sheet that you can order anything you want to keep as spare.
    This probably isn't saying much about me but I've found that whenever I need that spare part I so wisely bought I can never find it till long after the new part has arrived in the mail, been installed and has many, many hours on it.

    It didnt come with a spare module , but I ordered an extra. I mainly use my jeep as a trail rig and I dont wont to have to carry my old distrib with me so I bought a spare module to prevent being stranded on a trail with no chance of picking up a replacement part from a local auto parts dealer. I grew up with chevys so I learned if you keep a spare module in your glove box the one in the distrib will never go bad . R) R)

    A spare module is a good idea, if nothing else you'll have one in case the Omix people go out. Parts to fix aftermarket parts can be hard to find.

    I can't get mine to work. No spark, I tried with ballast, w/o ballast, adjusted from one end to the other, different coils...nothing. I put the old distributor in, starts right up. What might be wrong?

    DOA Module or pickup....... just a thought . If you were closer I would let you borrow my module. It does some sort of warrenty on it , might want to make a phone call to the support desk. Let us know what happens.

    Not to insult your intelligence but did you double check your + and - hook up on your coil? I only ask because I almost hooked mine up wrong. The color code seemed backward to me.

    Triple checked everything. I tried A Pertronix drop in conversion before I went to the full distributor and it did the same thing which was nothing. I like the distributor and would love to get it to work so I'm hanging on to it until I can figure out what's wrong.

    Whats your voltage at the coil ?
