OK, I have the knuckles apart so I can convert to 11” drums. Of course while I have it apart I’ll replace the king pins, bearings, axel u-joints etc., I even have a fish scale & shim kit. Believe it or not everything was still nicely greased up when I took it apart. Kingpin bearings & races look fine. Here’s the question… is it really necessary to replace the races if I install new bearings & king pins? Thanks:)

I've always heard that you need to replace the races and bearings as a set.

I wouldn't risk it if it were me.

Oh, and I wouldn't bother replacing the kingpins. They rarely go bad, unless yours show wear?

    Hey,
If the king pims look fine and the bearings look fine and greased, did you check to see if the wheel could be moved " wiggled " up and down? Maybe they werent worn enough to need replacing? I am planning a disc conv, and if mine dont show any wear, I'm not replacing them. At $20 for each cap and $18-20 for each bearing you are talking over $200 for just king pins and bearings. Jeeze ball joints dont cost near that much. Just my $.02

Man, you must be buying parts from a jewelry store. I don't think I spent half that on the last set I did. Although, that might have been couple of years ago. Hmmmm...........

    mruta I drank with Billy!

I found the prices pretty crazy when I called the auto parts stores too. I ended up buying the parts for a fraction of that by calling some bearing supply houses with the old numbers. I don't remember the exact price but it was under $50.

Bought mine through a bearing supply house that sold Timkin stuff.

What, may I ask, is a bearing supply house? Where can I find one of these?

Just what the name implies. They sell bearings and only bearings.

I'd start with checking your Yellow Pages.
