I've looked in my books, both Chilton's and Hayne's, and also Moses Ludels' books for this.

Is there some kind of padding or whatever in the hoop holding the column to the bottom of the dash in the early cj5's? I have enough clearance to stick my fingers in and was wondering.:?

when I took my 6 apart there was a heavy canvas type strap wrapped around it (same thing under my gas tank)....IIRC I used a piece of rachet strap material when I put it back together the first time

Yes there was a piece of Tarp type material, sort of looked like braided fabric. It was probably around 3/16" thick maybe 1/4".

i used a piece of eighth inch thick rubber around the colum, worked great. even without, there wasn't enough room to get a finger in there. a pic would be helpful...

:iagree: A small piece of welting is stock. The ross box is adjustable with slotted mounting holes IF you can get the bolts loose. Loosen the box, get your material in there and clamp the column to the bracket, then remember to tighten the box back to the frame.

I used a piece of an old serpentine fan belt.
