Well the saga continues I started a rebuild on Dana installed the crank and pistons. Talked to my brother yesterday and told him what was accomplished and mentioned what a pain the rear main seal was being a rope type and all. So he asked why didn't you get a 2 piece   Well the shop didn't suggest it and I didn't think about it. So what the best way of installing this I'm going over to Autozone to order it today. I figure the piece of mind if nothing else will be worthwhile. So what the best way to replace it right now the engine is still on the stand pistons are in and torqued. Can i get away with just removing the main bearing caps and lift the crank remove the rope and slide in the new seal or should I just pull the whole crank
    Thanks Jim C

it is possible to remove the rope with the crank in place. You need somekind of tool that wll push the rope out. My dad's is made of an old hack saw blade.
