As I am reassembling my '59 CJ5, I redid all of the electricals. Had the generator and starter rebuilt at a local auto electrical shop. (Yes, that was 2 years ago, but I had not installed or tested it yet.) So, I got to the point of trying the starter and all I got was a nice whirrrr.

I know that the starter was engaging before I had it rebuilt. How much of the ring gear should be engaged? And, how much should the pinion of the Bendix should broject into the flywheel housing? And, how far is the flywheel gear supposed to be from the mounting face for the starter?

Have you checked the voltage you are getting at the starter?

is the starter mounted when you are trying it?

    Voltage is 12.7 volts

    Mounted on bell housing.

Not even a hint that the gears are in contact...

If anyone can help, I'm having a similar problem. My starter engages for just a second and then disengages. Luckily, my motor is tip-top, so I can usually start it after some frustration if I'm in gear. I'd prefer not to buy a new starter.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

you may only need a new starter (bendix) drive.
