I was wondering how difficult it is to upgrade my '67 CJ5 fuel system with a rear tank. I have the chance to pick up a nice '73 under the rear tank and wanted to see if it is something that is common or will even fit. Any good resources for this upgrade. Thanks.

The '72-75 tanks are a little different from the later tanks in that they are not held in by the skid plate. You need a skid plate though, so get one with your tank. The tank is supported by brackets at the front and by bolting to the cross-membewr at the rear (I think). Jim (jpflat3a 2a?) posted a dandy picture of the whole assembly in the Intermediate forum IIRC a while back. Search - lots of discussion including the pic I mentioned.

I put one in my 72 CJ frame. I think I used all 76-up tank, straps and skid plate. Not that big a deal. I did have the body off my frame when I did the work and that saved me LOTS of time. IIRC I had to trim some of the stamped corners off the tank to get it to fit between the frame rails. The 76-up frame is wider in the back than my 72. Beats the heck out of a under seat tank.

A PO of my jeep plumbed in dual tanks - there is one in the rear and one under the seat. A manual selector valve sits between the seats. I really like it.

cj-john: Do you have any pics of the install?

jayhawk: are these manual selector valves easy to come by and install?

    Thanks everyone for your response.

any good RV/Marine store should have them
just ask for a manual 3 way change over valve
you can also get an elcetric version, operated by toggle switch, or.....
IH used a cable operated valve on their pickups and travelalls in the early/mid 70s

I would also install inline filters BEFORE the changeover valve...

Mine is the same way (also done by a PO), comes in handy since I don't have a working fuel gauge, kinda like switching to reserve on a bike

Bought one at Napa store couple of years ago.

evanjm Yeah, it's got an F-head.

Just wondering.. but why would you want to get rid of the under-seat gas tank? It seems a bit safer to me, especially when you're on the trail, you don't have to worry about hitting it on things.

    mb82 I feel great!

Size one reason the rear tank is 15gal instead of 9. Also a lot of people( including me) don't like having a gas tank under our tailbones.

Does anything in this photo strike you as interesting regarding this topic of underseat safety?

    1. 5 gallons more capacity
    2. More interior space
    3. Gas caps that seal
    4. Better ride quality
    5. More peace of mind not sitting on a time-bomb

Put a good skid plate under it and faggetaboutit...Jeeps are the exception - most 4WD vehicles on the trail run the gas tank in the back -- how many issues have you seen with them?

My Cherokee has its tank under the rear and it does pretty well, I don't really knock it too bad. I guess I could see how you could knock it but you if you pick a good line that shouldn't really happen that often. You'd have to have it jam something big and pointy right up in there.

Preach, I'll go through my pics to see if I have anything that would help you. May take me a day but I'll get back with you.

I personally only know of one Jeep this ever happened to....and I was a passenger in the Jeep...and the Jeep had open headers...and the driver put it out with an under-the-drivers-seat-extinguisher while the Jeep rolled backwards down the dune.... the Jeep stalled and flooded going up a dune...we had gas running out the headers while cranking...the Jeep fired off and those flames are what caught the tank on fire...
if you ever get flames out of the headers while cranking, you MUST keep cranking till the engine fires...this will put the flames out...just a handy bit of info for those that don't know
It has never bothered me in all my years...
liquid gas by itself is flammable, but not really dangerous
    the fumes....that's a different story..
