Im pretty new at this,so here's the story.

Yesterday after changing the stock tires on my 75 to 31's I decided to take it down the road.I can only go about 35 mph because it wobbles bad after that.
Well I hit a bump in the road and it came out of gear (but not the shifter).I tried to put it back in gear and it wouldn't grab so I turned it off and started it again and it worked, but everytime I hit a bad bump it would happed??

Why is it doing this now, because its never happened before???
What is it and how can I fix it??

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

    neptco19 That guy....

So the shifter dosnt move, it stays still and it comes out of gear? Have you tried holding the shifter in place when you go over the bumbs? Sounds like the synchronizers are bad....

No I haven't tried to hold it in place,I didn't think of doing that because the shifter didn't move.

So how would I know for sure its the synchonizers???

    mb82 I feel great!

Drain the oil and see if there is any brass in it.

Just to confirm - you did nothing but change your tire size?

Shouldn't have any connection to the tire size - just a circumstance.

A T-14 might pop out of 2nd if the inside of 2nd gear is worn. That will make the gear slightly skew on the shaft, and push the gear and synchronizer hub apart. If it pops out of gear and the handle does not move back to neutral at the same time, I'd think that the shift fork is loose on its shaft, or something to do with the shift top. If the fork were loose, you would not be shifting all the way into 2nd, and it would pop out of gear.

I'd pull the floor pan and take off the transmission top, and drain the oil as suggested above. Look for anything suspicious like loose parts or metal pieces.

How does it shift otherwise? does it grind going into any gear, make any funny noises, or shift hard?

you better leave it out of gear till you fix the shimmy.

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

This happens to me sometimes but its my transfercase. Only if I don't have the transfercase in good. It will drive but then go into neutral at a stop sign or something. Are you sure its your transmission?

I would keep an open mind and check all of your drive train. Your rear end, t-case and trans operation. You should also check your body mounts and engine mounts as when you hit a bump it could operate your clutch linkage and release your clutch. Could also shift your t-case for you also. Lots of things to check before you go tearing into something that might not be broken.
Can you get any forward gears while coasting to a stop? Grinding noises? Does your shifter still feel like it is shifting through all of the gears? Drive line still turning while stopped?(Have friend confirm this, don't run over yourself)
Just throwin some ideas out there, good luck and let us know what you find, these are fun questions!

Geez, both mine pop out of gear, thought that was normal :)

I think the idea of holding the shifter was to see if you could feel what was happening. Black Jeep pops out of second on decel. The shifter doesn't appear to move but if I hold it I can feel it pop out of gear. I am thinking I have worn thrust washers, gears or bearings. I guess in is possible I have a bent shift fork not allowing it to go all the way into gear also.

My solution is to upgrade the transmission. Something I have been wanting to do anyway. I wanted a lower first gear so I am swapping to a 4 speed. The three speed is a very simple transmission to rebuild and that is so far my plan for the street driven jeep.

It has lost gear in 1st 2nd and 3rd,it just happened sunday and I didn't drive it much longer after it happened.I will check the oil this week and look over it so that I can better describe whats going on.

It does grind a little when going into 3rd and I also smell a faint smell of some fluid but I cant tell what it is,when it happens.

I can take it in and out of gear when stopping and such, but if I hit a bump while going I have to turn it off and back on to get it to catch the gear.

I will inspect it and let ya'll know my findings.

    Thanks for the help.

Just a comment - I'm not a big fan of the T-14. My main complaint is that the ratio jump from 2nd to 3rd is too large (3.1, 2.6, 1.0) and you don't have a usable passing gear. I would use a T-15 or T-150 to replace it rather than rebuilding the T-14. T-150s seem to be the most common, and would be a good choice behind the 258.

Yes I got to rebiuld my T15A for the same reasons. You go to take off after shifting into 2nd and your at a low RPM and pow that thing launches out of 2nd, alway got to remember to have it wound up before shifting. Also it never stays in reverse when there's no tension on it. I've been eyeing a rebuild kit at 4wd.com for $129 just need to make some extra cash.

    Its a Jeep, you don't need a passing gear.;)YMMV
But my main like of the t14 gear ratios is that when you're creeping thru the woods in low range you actually have a useable 2nd gear to increase ground speed or decrease rpm unlike most transmissions that increase the speed to much for this application or decrease the rpm to the point of lugging to hard. 6 of 1, half dozen of the other.
As far as rebuilding its cheap and easy and you already have it.

As has already been suggested, get underneath and check if everything is tight. If it jumps out of all gears and you smell fluid, it could very well be your transfercase to trans being loose. The transfer case holds the transmission main shaft in position. If the mainshaft is allowed to work back and forth a little, it could cause what you are experiencing.

Well Jason (neptco 19) came up this weekend and took it down the road and it never once jumped out of gear with him driving:? :? He also said that the wobble was just a normal Jeep wobble,He said that I have a real Jeep now and thats how it supposed to ride!!!!R) R)

He's not sure about the gear thing, being it never happened with him and we really didn't have time to wrench on it.

So maybe its just me,im not sure,my brother doesn't know yet but after the holidays he's going to help me get it ready for spring.:)

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
