Frame Painting

    Ok,

    I'm about to start on my 66. First what does everyone use to cover the frame, por15 of something else. I live in MN so it might have some contact with salt.

    Next, how do you get the paint or rust proofing into the boxed area of the frame (around the engine mounts)?

    I POR'd mine with a single coat about two years ago, been sitting behind the garage ever since. You can definately see they arn't kidding about using two coats & a top coat. This stuff really doesn't like sunlight at all, not even the reflected kind, really starting to look like heck. There's a lot of brown spots showing up as well where there must have been pin holes :(.

    I used TecStar 2000 frame paint from my local automotive paint supplier/wholesaler.
    Cost about $22/gallon, comes ready-to spray. I brush it on everything: bumpers, swingout, etc... and of course the frame. I did my frame back in '96, it's held up to the abuse perfectly. As with anything, good surface prep and primer are the key.
    For boxed areas, I've heard of guys soaking a rag with the desired paint, then stuffing it into the boxed area like a swab, coating everything inside. Messy but effective :D

    I used rustoleum primer (the fish oil based one) and then a top coat of rustoleum semigloss black. I sprayed most of it. In the boxed areas, I used a cotten barbecue brush (looks like a littel mop)

    i used por chassis coat black, 3 coats great finish. no fading.

    I live in Mich and am about to paint my frame. I went to PPG and they suggested I use the Corrosion Resistant Epoxy Primer CRE-904 with CRE-91 as the catalyst. It can be thinned.

    I have had my frame sandblasted so I can't use the standard cleaning materials like Marine Clean or Marine Ready (they will turn the sandblasted metal a nice brown color, so I've been told by PPG). So it's sanding or grinding or cover the whole thing in some kind of metal bond product.

    I will apply a yellow topcoat to my frame, and PPG suggested the white CRE because it will make the Yellow color pop.
