I have a 1949 CJ3A that I am restoring back to near original. My question is on the air filter crossover, is it always a pipe with rubber on each end or was there a time when the entire tube was rubber or hose?

    Thanks

    Bill F Finally running

Always a metal pipe between to rubber hoses. The metal pipe just goes over the engine.

It is not really rubber hose between the tube and aircleaner.

It is an asphault paper duct. Reproduction replacements are available under 648024 Hose flexible air cleaner, the piece between the tube and air horn is a seal A-17317 Seal air horn-cross tube, and the piece between the air horn and carb is seal A-17318 Seal air horn-carburetor

Here are some 2a restored engines showing the details: http://home.off-road.com/~artc/images/CJ2A_Engine.JPG

Thanks- it looks like two different style oil bath air cleaners in your photos. Whic style is correct for a 49 3A, and where do I get these part numbers. Are they omix-ada or something else?

    Thanks

The Air Cleaner on the Red CJ would be correct for a 3A. Any of the good Jeep parts suppliers will be able to help you with the parts. If you want to stay very correct you will want the clamps as well so don't forget to mention those when you order.

Any of these fine dealers should be able to help you: http://www.midwestwillysreunion.org/vendors.htm
