Jason, I had the same problem with my original M38 engine. Re-ring it. I did mine in chassis and it only took a day and cost me elss than 100 bucks. oil rings were just so old and had no elasticity in them.

Ok after some more investigation it would appear this engine has been rebuilt somewhere along the line. On top of the piston it has .0300 stamped on it. Next question is how can I tell if they have had hardened valve seats installed? If its even possible...

It's possible. With one of the valves open, look for some sort of a difference in the metal around the seating area which would indicate an insert being pressed into the block. Basically, the machine shop hogs the valve seats out oversize, and then they press the hardened seat down into the block ad machine it back to factory spec. Kinda like sleeving an oversized cylinder wall back to standard size.

Heres a pic...It would appear that it does have them. Next ?? is I have been running lead additive thinking it was the original engine, is that going to be bad for anything or will I be fine to just switch back over to normal gas?
