!@#$!@$!@ 3 out of 4 bolts?

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by vanguard, Jan 21, 2006.

  1. I just finished reinstalling the drivetrain back into Betsy. When I started installing the transmission mount I found that my recently rebuilt T90 had an mounting ear broken off. Will three out of four bolts be enough or do I have to tear this friggin thing down?

To top it all off, when I moved the old t90/dana 18 back into the garage I got unbalanced and dropped them, not to mention falling on top of them. Transmissions generally aren't good things to land on. Got a nasty bruise and I'm about ready to sledgehammer the damn jeep.

I broke the same ear off the case on the old one and put a nice divot in the garage floor too.

You talking transmission to bellhousing? No way would I hook it up without all 4.

  4. No this is the transmission mounting plate. Bolts to the bottom of the trans and then the mount bolts to this plate.

Whew! Gotcha now. I'm trying to picture it in my mind. How big a piece broke off? Can you drill and tap another hole near the original so it'll have all 4 bolts? I'm thinking being a Jeep and it's intended use having all 4 would be best.

UWOP on the garage floor divot. :)

Me thinks you'll be fine with 3 out of 4 (then again, consider the source  ). The T-86 only has 2.
There is a side-torque mount on the x-fer case, right? If so you should be fine. Still'd like to see pics of it tho for gits & shiggles.

Not sure how much of yours is broke off, but i had the same problem on my old trans case. just the end of the ear was broken off (still had the other half of the hole). i just stuck a couple of HD washers on there and it worked fine :-\

  9. Picture of the broken ear from passenger side. It's directly behind the bolt.

big washer or two. or fab a bracket from the top to the bottom bolt on each side of the broken one. stud the broken one and install a grade 5 nut. if your pretty good with nickel rod, you can weld the broken piece back on.

There are no "Problems" only "Creative Solutions" waiting to happen.
    Keep on it.

P.S. Your alternator bracket is in transit. Dropped off at Bob's today.
