Many of you read I replaced my timing chain and oil pump recently and buttoned it all up on Sat.

Yesterday I spent some time setting the timing and idle on it. Tonite I drove it to town for pizza and it had no go. I mean nothin. I couldn't hardly climb hills.

It smells like it's running VERY rich. I've not had time to check but I'm suspicious of the plug wires perhaps. I didn't do anything to the carb settings other than adjust the idle to 550 RPM where it purrs nice and smooth but it just falls flat when you try to accelerate.

Any ideas where I might have screwed something up?

something wants to say it is 180 out to me. i think i had that problem when i fist had the 4.1L in my jeep about 5 years ago

You think? I guess it could be. I had everything lined up at TDC I thought.

That sounds like the vacuum advance. Did you remove the cap and wires when you did the timing chain? Odd or even? Might be out of sequence on the wires. Maybe a tooth off on the dist?

No vacuum advance on this one.

I removed the cap. Had the wires off, I know their in the right order I've double checked that. Wires could be out of synch I guess if I got 'em back on in the wrong terminal?

would start with retuning the carb. then the plug wires.

If it's an odd fire, might try shifting the wires one spot either way, it doesn't matter, and try it.

225 w/ HEI. Sorry for not including that info up front.

I think I did shift 'em one way to get everything to fit with the terminal hold downs. Is it possible that would have this effect? Heck I can't remember seems like I tried it and moved 'em back, maybe not. Guess I should go read what I did. R)

Carb didn't need tuned before this, I didn't touch it other than to set the idle. I'm not sure it is the carb due to that.

Could it possibly be the timing chain is off a tooth...then throwing off your timing mark and thus giving you no power??? Spose you could try and advance your timing by just turning the distributor and using your timing light...then recheck drivability. But if your valve train is off changing your timing wouln't help much.

I doubt the timing chain is off, I was meticulous when I lined everything up. It all fit just right, all the dots, #1 was at TDC for the distributor, the distributor lined up with the oil pump where I lined up the dots, etc. I could try that though. Nothing to loose by doing it.

At least I sure hope that's not what I did. :(

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

I'd try advancing it and then driving
do you have a timing light ?

Yes, set it to 5* BTDC yesterday.

I would say based on my HEEP, closer to 10* BTDC, and the idle at about 650-700 is better, especially in the winter....

I don't think either of those are to blame though.

I'm gonna advance it to 10* BTDC and see, then maybe some more and see what it does. I'm thinking it's a timing issue somewhere, somehow that's the only thing it could resonably be that I can conclude. I could be off a tooth or my plug wires are plugged in in the wrong spot in the cap and that's throwing it off. <shrug> We'll see.

i'd say 180 out, i almost mentioned it in your other thread, but it will crank up and sound perfect being 180 out... i've made the mistake on both points and hei setups, and i was even paying attention to make sure it didn't happen with the hei. if you're "lucky" enough to have dual exaust check to see that both pipes are putting out hot gas. 180 out will have a cold passenger exhaust.
