Now that I decided to go with a V6 should I rethink keeping my 3 speed trans. I will have to spend $300 to replace the shaft and cluster would I be better looking for a used 4 speed trans. If so what trans should I look for. I don't want this to snowball to the difs. I just put discs on those. My tranfer case is a S 18

The adapter and shaft would cost $300 new, but you should be able to find them for much less on ebay, Willystech, or here.

The truck 4-speeds are very popular. The SM420 or SM465 are GM transmissions that will easily adapt to GM bellhousings, if you are willing to spend the money for the adapter. The Borg-Warner T18 is also popular.

i dunno..depends on what you wanna do with the jeep...is it a rock crawler or just a mud/snow jeep?
i had great success with my stock 3 speed in the mud/snow due to the placement of r and 1st gear (directly inline). you get going forward and start slowing down, you can kick the clutch and pop from 1 to R in nothing flat. which helps rock the jeep if its stuck. if you do rock crawling, and dont think your jeep isn't geared low enough, the sm 485 is a GREAT tranny which is available ALL over. its a VERY easy way to add a completely new gear range to your jeep (extremely low). i am sticking an sm420 in mine due to verticle mountains here in AZ and i need the climbing gear. but when i was in oklahoma (mud) and maine (snow), the t-14 was brilliant. VERY quick shift from 1-R and back.
determine what the jeep is for and then decide the route to go..=)
    hope this helps..=)

Its going to be mostly a road jeep. I was just wondering if I can keep my spicer 18 transfer case if I change the trans. to a 4 speed and which one of the 3 Timgr recomends would be the best fit.

    Survey says...

    Yes! http://earlycj5.com/tech/trans/SM420/sm420_swap.shtml

But why would you want one for a mostly road Jeep? Seems expensive to me for a lower 1rst gear that does nothing for roadworthiness over the 3 spd. that I can see.

I didn't understand thats the way the gearing was in 4 speeds. I thought I would gain some top end?

Nope, 4th isn't an OD, it's still 1:1. You get a granny low first gear.

I think that most 4-speed automatics have an OD 4th gear can maybe cause that...

    I have the T18 in SSDutch...and 99% it might as well be a 3-speed.

But at least 2nd gear is synchro...still gotta get used to not having to wait at the light with the clutch in.

There is a 4-speed Ford SROD (single rail overdrive) transmission that can be adapted to your transfer case. http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html AFAIK it's a scare item though ... if you found one, R&P in Oregon makes an adapter. http://www.r-p4wd.com/site/

Likely cheaper and certainly easier to use your T-90 with a Warn/Saturn overdrive though.
