Stop The Rust

Last night when I was pulling maitenance on the new trailer and planning its future I noticed a, hopefully, minor problem. At the front and rear of the trailer bed forms a vertical lip about an inch high. The front and rear vertical panels are attached to this vertical lip by a stitch weld (1" of weld 6" gap between welds) the gaps "sealed" and the trailer painted. At some time about 8" of the "seal" failed and rust started. The plan is to have the inside of the trailer lined with LINE-X protective coating but right now I need advise on how to stop, kill, eliminate, destory the rust down in the gap between the lip and panel.

I just bought a rust converter from AUTO ZONE to do some touch ups on the jeep and it seemed to work well.

 

Rust converters like Extend work very well if used properly. Though not an approved coating, some Coast Guard stations use it 'illegally' on their search and rescue boats. Go figure...

What's most important in preventing rust is surface preparation. Make sure you wipe the surface with thinner (clean rag, please!) before applying the primer coating. Same goes for the paint.

 

have it glass beaded and then shoot it with RUST BULLET. You can find it with an internet search. I just had my entire cj3a glass beaded and then shot it with rust bullet. That is some great stuff. Give there website a look,You will be impressed.

 

i've never used rustbullet. i poked around on their site and they claim to be better than POR15, and while the tests are claimed to be independant, it is their site that you are reading that on.
i've had great success with POR15. i'd be curious to hear what a non biased site or anyone here that has used the two products have to say.

 

Same here. I've been to their site and have info on the way, but I'd like to hear more "testimonials" from people here, not off their website.

 

I've never tried "Rust Bullet" (haven't even heard of it before now), but I use POR-15 regularly. We use it both for new manufacture and rework of equipment on Naval shipboard equipment. On one job we did (through Raytheon) for the Danish navy, a group of transformers were left exposed in an open dock area to salt spray for over 2 years. The silicon steel transformer cores that had been coated with 2 coats of gray POR-15 were undamaged. A group of different models had been painted with mil-spec gray CARC paint - standard Navy stuff. Their cores were rusted to hell. The CARC paint is certified to meet MIL-STD-810 salt fog and salt spray requirements - but the POR-15 held up better.

Having lived on the coast all of my life and growing up working on fishing boats, rust is my mortal enemy and this has consistently been the best weapon in the fight. I use it on my Jeep and everything that I fabricate gest a coat of Ospho before painting.

Although I've used products like these before, I understand they are no substitute for the naval military coating procedure used by the US Coast Guard and Navy in their Colors and Coatings Manual:

1) mechanical removal of rust/pitting

2) washing of surface

3) application of 'green death' acid-mixed pre-primer

3) use of red lead primer

4) alkyd paint

 

Floyd, I bet that Ospho is the same as "green death", it is an acid mixed primer with the consistency of water.

 

I agree with 4S50 on Ospho. We live a block from the ocean and can see salt spray blowing by the street lights some nights. I can practically hear every thing rusting in the garage. Ospho makes a great prep before painting. Apply it with a squirt bottle, wipe off the excess and let it dry. Another tip that's more of a maintenance item is Boeshield or T9, developed by Boeing as a corosion block. I spray it on tools, bikes, etc.
