Carb help

I wanted to get the CJ running again before I went to redo the wiring ('70 with 225 V6). I recently put on a new fuel pump because the old one died. When I tried starting it by dribbling some fuel in the carb it would start for a couple of seconds, then die as expected. When I ran the gas lines to a temp tank (gas can), the carb was badly flooding. Gas would come out of the top of the carb (slot with the arrow pointing) like a drinking fountain.

Is this from the return line, working in reverse by sucking up gas too?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jim

I'd expect that's the bowl vent, and that you have a stuck float.

I would agree with Tim sounds like the float is not adjusted properly or it is stuck not shuting the the fuel off when the bowl is full.

One other thing to check is the psi of the pump my holley was to high and overpowered the float.Buy the way that is the bowl vent and you might want to check your oil level if alot of fuel went into the carb.

How would you go about checking the fuel pump pressure?

Install a press gauge at the carb end of the hose.
press wants to be 3.5 lbs minimum at idle speed; plug return line if equipped.
A volume test would check the output; place the open end of hose into a container, start the engine. Should pump about 1 quart in 1 minute.
Always be careful around gasoline, wear eye protection, no smoking.

I suspect the pump, since I'm pretty sure the old one wasn't doing this, unless the improved flow from the new pump caused the float to stick.

Can you remove the top of the carb to get at the float without causing any problems to the carb settings?

I have another pump sitting on the '68 I guess I could grab and try if that's easier. They are pretty easy to get to.

    Yes.
just be gentle upon removal and re-installation, don't force the top of the carb back down; the accel pump linkage might be hard to dis-connect from the top, only comes off/goes on one way.
