Wondering if there is a way to check lifters to see if they are ok or collapsed.

If you change the cam, you'll have to replace them. You may want to replace them anyway - only $3-4 each.

I'm with Tim. No sense in putting used lifters back in there, even on a used cam IMHO.

Oh, and did I mention that if you do decide to re-use them, NEVER EVER put them back in a hole other than where they came from, that is a sure-fire recipe for trashing the cam AND the lifters. (They get worn in to each other, and behave badly when mismatched!) Don't ask me how I learned that one...

Yea, my dad told me that when I was building my replacement l-head. Makes me wonder if he learned that in a Steve way or just knew it somehow.

yeah and make sure to throw a hone at the hole for a few seconds just to get a good finish in the lifter bore..

Unless you are completely disassembling the engine, this is a very very bad idea!!;)
Not to mention since you have a Buick motor oil pressure is dependent on how good of a fit your lifters have in there bores, if you take out even .0005" with a hone its gonna drop you're oil pressure considerably!!!!
