    It’s true what they say, “once you go power steering you’ll never go back.”
    After I broke my manual Saginaw box, I decided to make the switch. Darn glad I did.
    I figured it would be wise to purchase a reman steering gear instead of rolling the dice on a junkyard box. Found a power steering gear at Autozone, part 6529. This is the large bore 4 turn unit. You will also need a universal joint, Speedway Motors part 401-50611.
    With my small 2.5” lift, I used a flat pitman arm. Purchased the pitman arm from R&P.

    I already boxed the front frame horns and made a mount for the manual box, so I had a good starting point. The tricky part was temporarily hanging the power box long enough to mark some holes. I used 1” x 0.281 wall DOM tubing welded to the frame to mount the new box.

    Now that the box is mounted, you will need to figure out a pump and a good way to mount it. I found the coveted Buick 350 power steering pump and three piece bracket.
    This pump and bracket combo is a direct bolt on solution that doesn’t require any modifications. The bracket is only available on Buick cars made from 68-70 with the 350 power plant.
    This little gem is hard to find and expensive, but the clean install is worth it. You will also need a double crankshaft pulley.

    Once the pump and steering gear are in place you will need two hoses to circulate the fluid. I had some custom hoses made locally by Arizona Tubes and Hoses. I am very happy with the custom hoses made there and it was cheaper than buying parts from places like Summit Racing or Jegs.

    Lastly you will need a belt to make the magic happen. After some crude rope measurements and 3 trips to the FLAPS, I found that a 52” belt is the right length.
    I also flushed the system to remove any bits of crud. Overall I’m very pleased with the results and my forearms will thank me, especially when I take the old girl in the rocks.
    Now I can swap my giant school bus steering wheel for something smaller and fancier…maybe a nice chrome number made out of chains ;)

    Right so I have read this entire thread and now I am trying to decide. I was planning on using Herm's reversed kit but now I am not sure.

    Here is what I already have just laying around:
    1) 1969 Wagoneer PS unit
    2) DJ5 Postal Jeep steering column and steering wheel
    3) Manual saginaw steering unit from the DJ5
    4) My CJ5 steering column, steering wheel, ect
    5) Ford Ranger PS unit, PS Pump and the matching steering column and steering wheel

    My Jeep has the DJ5 frame that matches the Manual unit but I want power steering. The thing about the DJ5 frame is it is boxed almost all the way to the back and it is re-enforced up front where most people mount the power steering unit. Now I am torn on which way to go because if I use the normal DJ5 placement I still need a plate that attaches it to the frame.

    I am using the Ford Ranger 2.3 engine in my CJ5 so it seems the best option would be the Ranger Pump, PS Unit and Herm's kit. At least it seems that way at face value - what do yall think?

    PS - I would also like to add a tilt steering and I am assuming that some Rangers came with it. If not that is another option I need to think about

    :)The Wagoneer Box should be a Saginaw ..........If it is a 4 bolt box that would probably be a series 800 gear which is a good box , check the box for a large 76 number cast on top of each other.........although the valving inside as far as a quick or slow ratio is unknown and should be set up for about 3.5 turns lock to lock..........I also do a variable ratio on mine which is slow in the middle ( straight ahead ) and fast out towards the edges ( turns faster as you get towards the stop)Any of the columns can be modified to work...........if your going tilt then that is a different question. I use a Flaming River no frills black Tilt Column & they will make it to length. A Ranger pump is fine and can be rebuilt to match the pressure needs of the Saginaw........Herm's kit is unique but can add some conflict for room in the engine compartment and cross member clearance. As far as universal joints and the Double D slip steering shaft all of that stuff is pretty basic across all car manufactures.........The input shaft size and the sector shaft and Pittman arm be it a drop or standard should be all considered First for availability...........Planning where everything needs to go is important.
    As far as your frame and where its now boxed up front..........no big deal.....plan on cutting away what you need to get the proper placement of the steering gear in relation to the spindle arms , tie rod and steering column.........
    Lots of things going on up front in order to get the proper placement geometry of all components...........take your time it will pay off in the end. Good Luck!

    The Wagoneer is definitely a Saginaw, it has the big S and 76 right on it.

    I will look into the Flaming Rivers no frills and see what I think. I am trying to save using used parts but I will buy new when it is the better option.

    That's good news for you since the series 800 Saginaw is about the best steering gear on the market............I use Tom Lee of Lee Manufacturing in Sun Valley, Calif. to Rebuild mine..........he can also do a variable ratio if you so desire. And the Tilt column I use from Flaming river is a 30" 1.75" tube #FR20001BK............if you have an early CJ5 prior to 72 that column will bolt right up with some modifications to your floor board where it goes through............Good Luck!

    Sounds like I will just find the bracket that allows the hook up of a PS Saginaw unit on the DJ frame and keep it stock, I was leaning that way already but the Ranger unit was appealing also. I think both would be some what straight forward with this frame. We will see

    There probably is no aftermarket off the shelve bracket that you can just buy & weld on,,,,,,,,,,,,it may have to be made by you or others............Post a picture of your drivers side front frame horn so we can see what your talking about........the gear has to go in the right location.

    The DJ has the bracket already there from the factory. Mine was Manual but there is a PS option for it also. I just need to get the other plate - but it is not aftermarket, it is OEM

    I will try to get some pictures of it though

    Question, can the original steering box be tightened w/that nut on the outside?

    1965 CJ5.

    I also am parting out this 1985 Waggy and look what I found. Not sure it's the right one/can work but.

    I assume you are talking about the Nut in the center of the box with an Allen set screw? If so that is just a "fine" adjustment for the sector shaft to pre-load the shaft & bearings inside..........not an adjustment to fix a worn out gear box.

    Is there a kit or ?, that I can use my existing steering shaft location and then go out to a box or ?

    The motor motor is in the way etc.

    1965 CJ5 Navy Jeep 4Banger.

    Also, would a manual setup be better or can I use power steering w/the 4Banger and not rob a lot of power.
