Please help me with identifying this thing. It has a socket to take a wooden handle.

With the wood lined steel handle , I'm leaning towards a tool that was used for a repetitive task ? Also , those flats appear to be for ones foot : similar to a shovel of some sort ?

The forked, or notched, tip is intriguing. Doesn't appear to be sharpened. Its function would seem to be key to this mystery.

So heavy-duty it would seem to be industrial grade - makes me think of railroad tools, for instance.

Any maker's or owner's markings to be seen if you sanded it lightly?

There's zero clues on this thing...good idea about trying a light sanding to i.d. makers-mark. The forked tip does look like it was designed for pulling, e.g. RR spikes, however the tips are rounded (not angled like a claw hammer)and its arch is slight, almost flat (meaning zero leverage). I bought it with blacksmithing tools and old axe heads. Lots of logging history in this area so perhaps its timber industry related?

Any museums around your area that would have stuff like that?

With the forked blade could it be some sort of pry bar?

My first impression is for pulling up tap roots of some sort.
Tree saplings, sassafras root, honey suckle etc.
Too heavy for annual type weeds. Ginseng or root crops.

Not sure what kinda tree or shrub roots that need pulling in your region.
