The engine head on my Dauntless has 2 water port one in very front and one at the very back however the intake manifold has only 2 water port one in each side at the front. To me that does not make any sense.

    Engine casting no 1375162, head 1376348 the intake manifold B 1376398 E.

I cannot find any litterature to confirm that these 3 components were designed to work together .

Where could I find the engine number ?

    sounds correct to me
intake only has water passage crossover in front
rear right port on intake usually for temperate sending unit . but some guys run a heater hose there too

If you think about it for a minute, the heads are designed to work on either side. The water hole on the left front will be at the rear when switched to the other side.

I thought there was an oil return issue if the heads weren't on a certain side.

The heads are identical, maybe with the exception of front accessory bosses drilled and tapped. It is weird to see the left rear water port not go anywhere into the intake, but that is part of making them interchangeable.

Maybe I'm thinking of a different engine, but I remember a conversation about heads and oil return issues if they weren't on the proper side.

The heads for my 225 have the same casting number and are original to my engine.

The heads can swap but the rocker shaft assembly has to be put on the right way to lube rockers and pushrods. The oiling hole for the rocker shafts are drilled on both ends of the head but only line up on the oil port on the front end of the block. There is no oiling hole on the rear of the block. When you pull the rockers off you can stick a wire thru the hole and it lines up with a hole in the front cam bearing.

Maybe that's what I recall...I know I read something about oil or oiling.

You may also be remembering a post about the ports on a head being blocked to allow more oil to collect. It's a performance mod and I have it on one of my engines and I know another ran into the same thing a while back. Those heads have to be put back on the same side to allow the oil to push up correctly.
