Exact Number Production Of Renegade Is

Good morning, I have been searching for info on the Forum but several of the old pages that carried some sort of info on the Ren Is are sadly no longer available so here I am asking to the community.

I've read about production numbers or 500 with just a couple of colors available, I personally knew of just 250 with different colors. Is there any place that I can gather this info?
I was able to find precious info on what to look for besides the obvious striping on the hood (if still present) as far as "components" Renegade I specific (with probably one of the most accurate in my opinion the skid plate on the oil pan) but I would like to know if throughout the years more accurate info had surfaced and I might have missed them searching here.
    Thanks!
    Alex

There were two versions; Renegade l and Renegade ll. The first used the KH 8" steel rims and had a tailgate, and the later used alloy D slot rims and had a solid back panel. Lots of other detail differences.

Hi Donny, I know about the KH wheels. The one I'm supposed to look at has everything but the skid plate on the oil pan (didn't ask the seller to kneel down and look for it as I figured I would do it) but it's a very odd color. Like an ugly metallic green that actually was a 1970 color (it's called avocado mist) but having a special order tag on the firewall I'm wondering if it was just ordered with that color (that is original to the jeep) but with the renegade package. And since I've never seen another like that I'm just wondering. I've seen the "usual" colors if I can use this term but never one this specific one.

Check to see if it's been repainted. Under the cowl / dash is often a place people skip on a repaint. Pretty sure we haven't seen a Renegade in that color around here.

As far as production numbers I don't think we have any valid confirmation. To me it seems like there are several members here with them and they come up for sale somewhat often. If there were only 500 to begin with I would think we would see fewer of them around.

    This one?
    1970 Jeep Renegade
The color caught my eye too...it was a common color back then (my 70 Commando is that color) but I've never seen a Renegade with that paint.

If it's anything Renegade, it's a Renegade 1. Realize that you could buy the stripes over the dealership parts counter, and Jeep was very cooperative in those days about special orders. I think the former is more likely, but maybe somebody special ordered a Ren 1 in Avocado Mist Poly. Possible. I recall there are some subtle wiring changes you can look for that positively ID a Ren 1.

You realize you can search the site with Google, Bing, whatever - site:earlycj5.com Renegade - Bing - lots to look through. Try different search terms.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

The oil pan skid plate is visible in the front axle/suspension photo.

Oh I totally understand you could buy the stripes over the counter. But at that point rather than buying over the counter stripes, additional instruments, dash pad, wheels, tire carrier, rollbar, pinstriped seats it would have made more sense special order a renegade package in a different color. For sure it would have been cheaper in my opinion. I read about the wiring on the firewall and of a resistor on the firewall as well and those seem to check too. And to top it off there's a special order tag on the firewall as well with a number but i don't know if it's possible to find out anything from that anymore. unless obviously the owner has additional info or maybe the build sheet.

As far as searching I have but several links to older pages are broken, or the pages no longer exist unfortunately

I see a lot of Renegade stuff...wheels, tire carrier, skid plate, stripes, and those awful dump truck leaf springs. It really appears to be an unmolested (mostly) survivor in very good shape.

This is now the 4th Avocado Mist Ren1 I have seen and is the second that is the original owner.
Has engine skid plate, both gauges, Ren1 wiring and resistor on firewall, original springs, dash pad, back seat original., front seats recovered green, swingout spare tire carrier, draw bar. Still has trim and paint code tag on firewall. Has all the bows for a top and black doors but no top. Kayline? Has all 5 KH wheels. He did not have any children and bought it new. These are the original miles.

It is things like this, that throw all of the conventional wisdom about the Ren1 out the door. Even this letter below gets trashed as it only states two colors. It has now been confirmed over the years with quite a few original Ren1 owners coming forward with additional colors such as prairie gold, avocado mist and plum. It would seem that Jeep indeed did look the other way and allow some dealers at minimum to special order these colors.

The truth of the matter is that there was/is no surviving documentation as to the true number of Ren1 and Ren2's produced. It is even harder still to pin down the numbers made of each color. Throw in special colors that are known to exist (Avocado Mist for one) of at least 4 and your numbers are skewed even further.

Hah, I was going to say you need to talk to Rubicloak. He probably knows more than any other living person about Ren 1s.

    ...and he chimed in.

Not even close. There are quite a few people here that make me look like a moron when it comes to these. Keith would be one of them

Well thanks to everybody that gave his input. Went looking at her and she talked to me. So I guess now I have another little one. It will need a little attention but I think it's a solid vehicle

    Congrats!

I am curious, did it look like it was originally a different color?
