Purging Trans Fluid

Finally drained the trans fluid from the old T86 in my rig and it came out like sludge. Do I need to purge the old fluid/sludge until I’m sure it’s all completely out or can I let it slowly drain for a while and that will be sufficient? If I do need to purge it all out, any suggestions on how to do that?

I'd just mix some kerosene or diesel fuel into it, and let it break down the sludge, and then drain it down again. But that's just me.

 

Thanks for the quick response, SFaulken. Makes me a little nervous to put kerosene into the trans. Is it not an issue if some of it is left in the trans and doesn’t get completely drained out?

 

Nope. Not in my experience. Heck, lots of guys run a transmission on pure Diesel/kerosene for a little bit to clean everything out when changing fluids. Just fill it with Diesel/Kerosene, and take it for a couple really "easy" cruises around the block, to get it good and churned up, You wouldn't want to do it for very long, or do it with any sort of load on it, but a little idling around? Won't hurt a thing.

I would not run it with kerosene or whatever in the transmission. Residual solvent will contaminate the new oil. Be sure to use GL-4 oil, discussed many times in this forum.

 

I use diesel after swamping my jeep. It works great.

 

I have the GL-4 oil but I want to clean out all of the sludge before putting the fresh oil in. Is there a better way to do that other than diesel/kerosene? Or should I just fill it with the fresh oil?

 

I have used light engine oil to flush. 0w-20 or straight 10w(if you can find it) will clear out some goobers. I didnt drive with it - just put the TC in neutral and go through the gears.
