i have been neglecting my old '48 model M for a couple years now. Havent kept it covered up, havent been able to start it so sits more and more making things worse. Started working on rebuilding the carb. Managed to get all the brass fittings out. Little bit of torch to the carb base and things came loose.
I have a gm alt like we love to use on our jeeps. Found a 6v positive ground kit and have that all converted over for the last 4 years maybe? Just need to fab up a mount and swap it out for the generator.

First step is to get this carb cleaned and put back together, stick a new battery in it, clean out the fuel and see if i can get it fired up to get it in the garage for the alt conversion

My brother-in-law and I purchased an M with a stuck motor about 8 years ago....It’s still stuck, so you are doing better than we are!

I just learned something. The 6v alternator would be great on my 51 B (assuming it spins fast enough). When I got it, there was a 12v generator on it. It was hard to start because 12volts spin the engine too fast to allow the retarder in the magneto to do its job. The reman 6v generator and regulator have never worked. The 6v alt may be the answer, thanks!

Ive had mine for 20 years now. I know people do the 12v conversions but not sure if there is a right way or billy bob way to do it so the mag would work. The distributor on the M might make a difference?

My regulator is shot and the generator worked when i got it but the wirea to the brushes have since broken. I've tried soldering it back but between that and the regulator its a lost cause. I know you can get different size pulleys for the alt so might be a learning curve on what size works. Cant remember if the kit does away with the minimum rpms before it will start to charge or if it will start charging right off the start

Hummmmmm. I installed one wire 10 SI's on my A, H, and M, all of which were 6 volt/mags. Other than installing 12 volt lights, there were no other alterations. If anything, all three start WAY better on 12 volts and, to date, no starter problems. That said, I keep the cranking time short.

You'll find it to be a "tough" little tractor! I put my 1947 through a lot in my 40 years of ownership. Original 6 volt starting system has been "adequate" year-around.

Mine is a late styled so it’s not a hand cranked flywheel. I found with a 12v battery, I would hit the starter, and let off, repeat. After bumping the starter, as the engine slowed down it would ultimately fire. After putting a 6v battery in, it started much better.

My B was clearly used and abused by the PO. It also had a mid-match of parts. For example, it had an unstyled B carb on it. There is a good chance that my starting is a result of being warn out. I haven’t done much mechanically besides change the generator, carburetor, and oil. Oh, and adjust the mag.

Drained the oil since it was really high. Think i drained a gallon of water out before oil started coming out:whistle:

Carb is cleaned up and ready to go back in. Got the kit from Steiner's. Highly recommend it. Came with every screw clip shaft and seal needed. No problems with fit.

I dumped some gas in the tank saturday. Sediment bowl shutoff leaks. Ill have to pull that apart and see if i can get it to seal up better.

Did you check to make sure the floats still float? They look pretty corroded.

I did have to weight it down in the carb cleaner solution:D

Thats good. A pin hole can make for a really bad day.

Well, think i found my main problem.
This is the glass water separator that bolts to the botom of the tank. The inlet is a little plugged with junk

I do have another rock arm housing for the back. I did a boo boo about 15? Years ago. The back blade came up too high and popped the linkage inside of the housing out the back if the case. I found a new one right after i brazed it up. It leaks slowly, but has worked. Might as well get the new one on it while i plan to do other stuff

Alt bracket. Had a piece of 2" steel that worked perfect for heating the bracket and making the 90 degree bends.
