Where Did You Put Your Muffler With Rear Fuel Tank?

My 71 with rear mount fuel tank had side pipes that have been removed during my Saginaw swap. I will not be going back to side pipes. There’s a mandrel bending shop I’ll probably use to to merge my two manifolds into one and out the back. I’d like to keep clearance high. So what diameter pipe did you use for your V6 and where did you put your muffler? I’d like it to be quiet so no bullet mufflers and ideally everything can stay between frame rails. The factory routing I’ve seen but curious if anyone has done it differently.

    howdy,
yea I did it differently on my 71 but I use wheel well headers on my replacement Buick 231. So the natural placement for the mufflers is outside the frame rails between the front and rear tires which I use then I routed the exhaust up thru the rear wheel wells and out the back. Works very well as its quiet, low restrictive and looks good with the dual exhaust tips out the rear. I can send pics if you are interested.

    cheers,
    willie

any muffler shop can remake the crossover pipe with a driver side rear exit manifold

How're your fabrication skills? I made my own to fit my small space and it was surprisingly easy.

I just built my exhaust on my cj5, 4.3-t18-d20. When I find my camera, I'll post a pic. Basically I put the cross over behind the transfer case, and out the back. I'll try to get pic tomorrow, Ron

With a rear tank, you need to put the muffler between the tcase and the rear axle.

Thanks all. I think the factory position is likely my only option. I was going to get a fancy muffler like a Magnaflow or something but I think I'll just let them put in something they stock.

The rear exit like that is the best - but not perfect - for keeping exhaust fumes out of the cabin. With a single exhaust, it will always exit on the side opposite from the fuel filler.

On my CJ5, I had dually glass packs outboard of the frame, between the wheels, routed back along the frame with rear exits.

I built my own exhaust also. To avoid crushing the cross over I ran it around the front of the oil pan and out the back. The muffler is located between the t-case and rear diff. Here is a pic of most of it prior to install. I'll look for a pic of the muffler installed.

That is a good idea. Would appreciate a picture of the muffler setup.

Here are a few more pictures. I don't seem to have one of the muffler. I' ll get one today or tomorrow.
Pic 1 wrapping around the front of the oil pan. Pic 2 connecting driver side with passenger side. Pic 3 winding through the skid plate and towards the muffler location.

Looks nice! Hows the clearance between pinion and pipe?

I have hit it a few times with the front drive shaft, self clearanced. Thankfully not terribly. I'll check but it was a while back. I just ordered a bunch of parts from Summit. I have found that many of my receipts are faded and unreadable
