Mar 1971 Clutch Setup/configuration Question???

    My Mar of 71 currently has the bell crank clutch setup. It also has the outrigger on the outside of the frame aft of the clutch pedal for the cable setup.

    I have now personally seen several 70-71 CJ's with the cable setup and several with the bell crank setup. Service manual states that the V6's came with either but does not delineate a cutoff or why one would be used over the other "Which is correct?

    I guess it is possible the PO removed the cable and installed the bell crank?

    Thoughts?

    My May 71 V6 has a cable clutch and my late 68 has the linkage. The change was somewhere between there.

    It's really weird. And as you know, my 69 donor also has the linkage. I was thinking that perhaps it was a 70-71 thing? Having said that though, I have seen 2 71's that have the linkage. I just do not know what to believe anymore lol.

    My april 71 had the linkage, has advance adapters roller chain now, works much better.

    Thank you guys. Your responses are showing why I am so confused as to which one should be used. I am going to go with the cable setup since I have the outrigger on the frame. Still confused as to why there is no demarcation as to when the change happened.

    I used to think my linkage was a home made part it was so poorly constructed until I saw another 71 on Craigslist a few years ago that had it. I would bet it was designed to be a stop gap when the assembly line was having supply issues with the cable. My 71 did also have the brackets in place for the cable, but they weren't used.

    My April 1971 has the cable.

    I can’t really see them running out of cables, the cable they used is a GM truck emergency brake cable. That’s really why they still make them, not because of the few jeeps that have them.

    Only footnote I can find regarding the cable set-up says it's used with the diaphragm type clutch/pressure plate.

    In 1970/71 the cj5 was using 4 different cables.

    # 994156 @ 58.18 for 4st with diaphragm clutch
    # 994799 @ 57.8” for 4st with Borg Beck 3 finger
    # 994798 @ 57-7/8” for ST with Borg Beck 3 finger
    # 992533 @ 58-1/4” for ST with diaphragm clutch

    So anyway I’m curious to know how many of you with the cable control actually like the way that they perform ?

    Jim, can you verify which cable that is ?

    WARNING ! I had to make an educated GUESS as to which cable was used for which type of clutch .

    Love it.
    Going on 37 years now, original cable installed in 1983 still in use.
    With LUK diaphragm clutch, you can easily push clutch to floor with your hand.
    Some hydraulics in other Jeeps are way harder and stiffer.
    But....maybe they have a stiffrace type pressure plate.....

    I've got the factory cable clutch in the '71 and the factory linkage style in the '68. The cable in the 71 is smother and takes much less effort than the linkage style. It's on my project list to rebuild/lube the clutch linkage pivots on the '68 so it may get better.

    While the effort on the 71 cable clutch is less, the "engagement zone" is smaller. It feels grabby if you're used to driving the 68 but feels normal after a few minutes of driving.

    All in all, I prefer the cable.

    My 71 has a cable and I've broken a few. I'm going to be trying the Hydraulic conversion, but using the pedals through the floor.

    Mine Apr 71 . cable clutch . no problems
    well maybe one . little ball on adjuster broke . towed home
    took the broken piece cut the end off . screwed bolt in (red loctite). with die grinder put a long thin flat on it
    been good ever since

    My first 5 was a late ‘69 build, titled ‘70. It had hood reflectors and a clutch cable. I’m guessing it was one of the first with a cable.

    Another with a 1/70 and clutch cable - In terms of operation its great, and works great off road (also have a LUK diaphragm clutch). But the ball on the end of the adjuster nut did break off once an almost left me standed (I was 2 blocks from home and basically coasted)...for those with a cable, carrying an extra adjuster nut with the ball on the end might be a worthwhile small part to keep in the kit.

    I do find it interesting that into the 71's you can find both the linkage and the cable though. Typical Jeep.

    992824 was the part number for the factory cable conversion kit.
    It would contain the two brackets, cable and adjuster, and all the nuts and bolts required, including the instructions.
    I only mention this as they do appear on Ebay once in a while; I bought two kits a couple years ago.
    Usually the seller has no idea what it is; it's marketed as a "anti-chatter" kit.
