Dauntless Timing Chain And Crankshaft Seal

    i have removed the timing cover on my 1969 Commando to replace the crankshaft seal. After getting the cover off, I see that the chain appears to have a lot of slack and the damper is about worn out. I have had the harmonic damper redone by the Damper Doctor as it had slipped. I have a couple of questions:

    - Does anyone know a number for a neoprene lip seal for the crankshaft instead of the packing that was originally used?
    - Are there any opinions on using a double roller chain/sprockets vs. the OEM style? If the double roller type is used, are dampers still used?

    The timming cover gasket set from felpro comes with new neoprene seal and instructions to replace . All parts are readily available (got mine from amazon) or Rock auto. If you use the double roller it does not use the tensioners. I don't see any real advantage ,maybe gee-whizz factor. Be sure to remove water pump and check for erosion behind pump on cover. I have filled with JB WELD and smoothed out if not real bad.

    Thanks, I saw the Fel Pro Kit, but couldn’t tell from the photo about the seal. My after pump looks pretty good, but Looks like it has been built up previously.

    The original cam gear had plastic or nylon gear teeth and they were prone to breaking. Aftermarket gears are all metal and much better. If expense is no object, a name-brand roller chain is the best.

    Thanks. I think the design must have changed along the way, unless mine has already been changed. My 1969 is all steel, but the chain is sloppy and the tensioner is very worn.
