Having owned 3 CJ5's , 2 CJ6's, 2 CJ7's, and 1 CJ8, all have merits and limitations, short wheel base Jeeps are maneuverable in tight quarters, lack room inside and don't handle at highway speeds as well as long wheel base Jeeps, 7's and 8's are easier to get in and out of. All things being equal, I'd choose a CJ6 FOR MY PURPOSES, every one has a different use in mind and fact. You will have to make your decision based on your needs and use. People building concours restorations have different needs than those building a rock crawler, obviously, your budget, ability, facilities and intended use are all things to factor in. Good luck!

A CJ6 with a V8 is the 8cyl go cart you always wanted as a kid.
As nimble as a 5 with an experienced driver and doesn’t feel like it’s out of control at highway speeds.
    Best Jeep ever

I like my cj6. Not as choppy on bumps as the 3B or the 5. More room also.

I agree with most that’s been said about ride and personal preference. If you want a different vehicle that is always a topic of discussion a 6 is good. CJ5/7 are a dime-a -dozen. When we started our CJ6 build I told my wife that we could buy a nice CJ5 or 7 for a fraction of what it was going to cost to restore this CJ6, but its a family “heirloom” so we do it. Parts that are not the same as CJ5 can be hard to find (tubs etc). My guess is that a good resto-mod CJ6 will bring $16K and I will probably have that much in it before I am done, even doing most of the work myself. I could find a nice CJ5 all day long for $5K.

red61cj5 Just fell off the turnip truck!

If I had the money I would take my wrecked cj5, stretch the frame and put an Aluminum Aqualu cj6 body on it. But I can barely rebuild an engine so that's probably going to be a few years in the future.

I bought this 66 in the summer of ‘19 for $3500. Guy was asking $7K if you can believe it. Not sure what kind of investment Jeep he thought he had. Didn’t run and had been parked in a field in northern CO for a decade. Roof had clearly been stored upside down outside for the layer of dirt and water marks inside the roof. Had 46k miles on it primarily as a snow plow rig for a ski area and remnants of that life such as overload coil springs on the front axle, numerous frame cracks, and what was left of a plow mount. Had severely rusted out floor boards big enough to pass a volleyball through and almost as bad body panels, a nice multi-patina paint scheme of rust, red, and pink, some missing and broken windows, no working door handles, 1975 bias ply tires, but overall complete and in my restoring mindset opinion; a good candidate. Here’s some before and after of the resto/mod. I left the rims untouched for now. The body has new floor boards and hat channel, is fully Rhino Lined except for the dashboard (took 7 gallons according to the shop) and repainted its original "President Red" paint. Rebuilt the Dauntless and the heater system. P/S conversion completed. Warn OD added. Full Meyer hard top restoration with interior roof trusses (to restore the roof contour) all new glass (rear windows are lightly tinted), weather seal, handles, door mechanisms, and white tractor enamel paint. Roof restoration took 5 months. The rest of it took 7 months. I plan to drive my investment in time out of it although it may fetch better than 3500 if I sell it now...maybe.

Whole Jeeps are mostly terrible investments. Jeep parts can be decent $ maker but nothing more than beer $, unless you're reliably lucky. It's truly labor of love or simply a past time that pays for itself (which there are worse things).

I got the Roxor due to it being pretty much a cross-breed between the diesel early CJ6 and CJ7/YJ, depending on how you wanna think about it.

Early CJ6s have have solid shwag lol

That really turned out nice. I think White or Red wheels would look great.

Thanks guys. It was a LOT of work crammed into those months all while working a full time and part time job. The rims look like they were some grey color before turning rusty but I can’t find any reference to that being a stock color. I may experiment with some rattle can flavors after a date with the sand blasting cabinet.

I concur that the 6s prob won’t gain the following that the 8s have received but being a CJ5 guy from my first car, I always thought the 6s were this weird Jeep option that only a few would recognize it but most un-educated folk would either
    1) not even notice theres any difference or
    2) think its one of those...”what’s that name???um....oh yeah!, SCRAMBLER!, that’s it”

If you go red on the wheels, you will need to have the chrome beauty ring!
