Console Shifted 3 Speed

I have one of those console shifted 3 speeds in my 68 Commando and the shifter is super sloppy, it makes it a chore to drive. Is there some sort of rebuild kit to take the slop out?
    Thank you

I would check the linkage and see if there is any wear in that area. I have the same set-up and it is still in good shape.

Considering how few parts are available for these vehicles, it seems extraordinarily unlikely that any such kit exists. Possibly NOS parts hidden away in some warehouse? I would assume you'll need to find/modify/fabricate whatever bushings might be present in the linkage. My first move would be to take it apart and inspect.

Is this an externally shifted 3 speed like an old car 4 speed? I never knew such a thing was used in a Jeep...

Automatic, I would think. All the Jeepster manuals were top shift, AFAIK. The other possibility would be column shift, but that was never offered, again AFAIK.

Yes, it’s an externally shifted floor mounted 3 sp T86. It uses the same console as the automatic, it wasn’t very common, which is why I can’t seem to find parts for it

Never heard of such a thing!

    We need pics! :coffee:

You could use the same side-shift internal parts that were used with the column shift, and then add a shifter of the type used in passenger cars - assuming the alignment was ok for the location in the console. Not doubting you, but I would have guessed it's a PO mod using an automatic console and an aftermarket shifter. Maybe its OEM-ness is obvious when you see it in person.

Exact same shifter I have in mine. Extremely hard to find parts for it.

Super rare shifter! I know they made them, but have never seen one. I think they were only used on Convertibles, which were pretty rare themselves.
