Starting In On My 71ish Jeep

Lol, I’m still agonizing over it. Yesterday I would have painted it blue. Today I’m thinking I like the orange better.

 

I dig the orange. But I would go the yellow/greenish that the 74 offered.

This isn’t helping me make up my mind at all

 

Did you fill in all the holes in the firewall and tub that you don't need. Water seems to come in every hole.

 

Yep, anything that wasn’t going to be used I filled in. And I put a drain on each side and in the tool box that a boat plug will fit.

 

Yup have loved that color since I was a kid. That is partly why I own a Jeep the neighbor back then bought one new that color.

 

So I’ve gotten a bit more done on the Jeep tub. Got the body work wrapped up, and sprayed it in sandable primer. Hopefully tomorrow I can give it a final sand and get the color sprayed.



I also got the hood straightened out nicely, it had a bit of damage that I had to address. I wish I had gotten a before pic, as I think it turned out pretty straight.

 

a contrasting guide coat will help with the sanding, i use cheap black spray paint. a dust coat of black, sand till the black is gone your done sanding. believe it or not most people sand too much primer back off. the guide will show low spots or defects

 

Thanks, I’ll give it a whirl. I’ve only painted one other vehicle, and that was probably 20yrs ago, so I’m curious to see how well I can get this one to turn out.

 

One cool thing I found, is I bought what’s called a shrinking disc, just a stainless disc that mounts on your grinder. I used it on the damage that was on the hood, along with a little hammer and dolly work, but what it accomplishes in shrinking out dents and imperfections and oil canning is amazing.

Here is a pic of a 1971 cj5 with bid bad orange. Tub has spray on liner inside and underneath.

 

Damn, that sure looks goods! The seats really compliment the orange paint.

So after much deliberation and second guessing, I finally decided to just go with the blue I originally wanted. Stuck the tub in the booth and gave it a whirl. I have to say I’m pretty happy with the results. First time I’ve ever sprayed a metallic, and I have to say it’s sure kinda tricky to lay down. The paint is a single stage polyester polyurethane from endura.

The finish was better than I expected. I have an old devilbiss hvlp gun, and I bought a new cheapy hvlp gun from princess auto (Harbor Freight to you guys south of the border). I did a test panel and compared both guns and for me the cheap gun sprayed nicer. My devilbiss is quite old and could be worn out, etc.

Anyway, here’s some pics. It’s a lighter blue than what the pics show, and boy when you put the light on it the metallic sure pops!

 

Looks good single stage metallic is tough to get even.

That looks gorgeous! Very close to the color I originally wanted for my jeep 20+ years ago.

 

A little update, got a few more things done in the last few days, I finished painting all my body panels, all that’s left is the dash and I have some repair work to do to it to patch the holes from a radio and speaker.


I also took the time to set up my clutch slave cylinder. I went with a pull type from speedway motors, and got their master cylinder and braided clutch line as well.
I modified the original cable mount so that the slave would mount to it, and set it up so the slave would pull in the same direction as the old cable setup did, so I’m hoping it works ok.

 

Before you go any further, I would convert the fixed end of that slave cylinder to a heim joint. You will have problems (surprisingly quick) with the slave cylinder if you don't have a pivot on both ends.

 

Good point, I never considered that. I think when I get home today I'll change it up and put a hiem joint there.
