This is one of the few photos I have seen with the spin on oil filter that is horizontal. Mine is built that way. It also has the fender mounted oil bath air cleaner. I saw one of those fender oil bath air cleaners on a for sale ad awhile back. My engine bay is relatively unmolested at 24,xxx miles but you can see modifications have occurred.

This is from my engine bay. It was manufactured in August 1970 and titled as a 70 with the 71 HEW decal.

Very interesting lots of changes going on at that time for regulations and those body’s who regulate 1971 would be last yr to regulate vehicle emissions I would guess your engine was certified to 1971 standards I have a August 1971 production but it is a 1972 when Jeep was going thru a number of changes as well as regulatory

Seems like it's pretty unanimous that the "red" paint dressing the fans and air cleaners in the Dauntless ads were just for the ads right? Did anyone ever see one painted that way out in the wild?

Yes you're correct - the red paint on the engine accessories appears to have been shown for marketing purposes only.
