Huh. I've been using a military variant, has an adjustable "postman" slide buckle.

I've looked at the pics and still not sure why has to have the loop. One thought is by folding the 'tail' in first like in the pic, it will not flap in the wind. But I never remember to do the flap first and it has not been an issue.

Lately, I've been driving with the windshield down and really enjoy it. Especially when in the mountains.

I'd bet that not flapping like mentioned is most likely the reason.

I just swallow them. Helps me get my protein for the day. Some are better than others.

I leave mine down all the time unless it's raining.

If the Bestop I have was easier to remove/install, I'd try the windshield down more often. I've only driven it once with the windshield down. At the time I had contacts and anything above 15 MPH was painful (from the wind and crud in the air). I'll have to try it again now that my eyes are fixed.

I have my Bestop Supertop off 8 months of the year (March to Oct) Taking off the top takes me 10 minutes, but putting back on is 30, haha! But definitely worth taking the top off and driving with the windshield down. I only drive 20 mph tops, as you stated, lots of flying critters to whack you. I just love the smiles you get, and so many conversations whenever you are stopped. And of course there’s the National Go Topless Day every year :D
