tuxedo park questions

    I was reading through the archives and found that my jeep is one of the CJ5A's VIN 8322A17395. This would explain alot of strange things, such as the chrome bumper, hinges, etc, a stup sticking up for the hood orniment, holes in the side of the hood for some type of emblem, and a few other things. My question is where can I get restoration parts like the chrome hinges, orniment, and side emblems? I am just getting ready to paint the old girl and would like to try and keep her stock (minus the horrid original white color, was black a tuxedo option?)

    Not sure you can buy repro Tux parts.
    Sometimes they come up for sale here or you could post in the wanted section.

    Your 67 CJ5A jeep is interesting. For what it is worth, it is the highest serial number that has been reported on the 5A.

    Since one set of records I have says that 7394 cj5A's were made, it seemed that yours possibly could have been the last one.

    However, I have another set of records that says that the last serial number was 17421.

    Both could be correct, they could have skipped some serial numbers for some reason.

    At any rate, yours has the highest serial number reported....

    It is worth bringing back to the Tuxedo Park livery. Toughest parts to get are:
    chrome tail lights
    license plate light
    wheelcovers.

    Speaking of hard to get chrome hall taillights, could a guy get a set of the reproduction hall lights and have the housing chromed?

    Thats what I plan on doing. I found one used Hall a couple of weeks ago at a salvage yard for $20. I'm gonna get a repro and have them chromed. Difficulty is getting the light socket out without destroying the light housing. A least I would think the socket would need to come out prior to chroming.

    As for any of the Tux stuff, watch Ebay and the other parts boards. Its taken me almost two years, but I have about everything but the wheel trim rings. Theres a set on Ebay right now at $45. I have to decide how bad I want them to justify bidding. I have a feeling the price is going to go up a lot higher than that.

    If you're patient, everything will come your way eventually.

    OK guys --- here is an absolutely crucial tip for those wanting to get a tail light chrome plated.

    If you don't do this you will end up with a mess, much of which is hazardous waste.

    Before taking it down the the "Plate-n-shine" chrome shop, completely disassemble the light assembly, which means removing the shrink wrap and all the wiring and wiring / lamp connectors.

    Also remove the nuts from the mounting screws.

    It'll be tempting to leave the wiring intact - why not??? After all it is a royal pain to get it apart,.

    Because it will come back so full of Chromium gunk that you'll have to replace all the wiring innards anyway, and the chromium that you will be dealing with is not the 'good' kind that you find in your one-a-day vitamins, it is the bad kind that you find in superfund sites.

    And tiny amounts of that chromium aren't anything to fool around with.

    Thats kinda what I was thinking and why I want to remove the whole light socket/wiring part. Any idea as to how to go about it without destroying the light housing? It looks to be a pressed in type of thing.

    I have experience tearing apart the lights. Cut away the shrink wrap, and then the contacts/little fiber disc/spring/wires come out the light end. The little fiber disc has a "finger" that engages a slot in the light to keep it in, pop it out with a small pick tool. The finger holds the contacts in proper relation to the bulb, so you want to try to preserve it. I learned this experimenting on a rusted out front turn signal, I'll bet the construction of the Halls are the same. Don't know about the new repros. I have seen replacement contacts available, this may be the way to go if the originals are damaged during removal.

    There are similar chrome pieces that can easily be bought on ebay. For instance I bought a set of chrome hood hold-downs for under $10 shipped. Also, chrome hood hinges are often available. Lots of luck! :)
