Hey guys, been a while since I lurked around here. I just picked up a ‘52 M38A1 from a buddy, guess I just wanted to show it off haha!

It seems to be 100% complete and original(besides the paint obviously), and even had the old 24V mag mixed in with the parts. I never seen one before so I thought it was pretty darn cool.

May plans are to get it running and put together, and drive it around the property and do some light off-roading. Eventually I’d like to install lockers and a small lift and 31-32” tires, a 4 speed with granny gear(need to research if there’s one that will bolt in place of the T90), and paint it the original army drab green.

Anyways, I’m sure I’ll post up progress pics here soon!

    It's not a magneto, it's a waterproof distributor. That's just the company name. :)

Welcome from Michigan, you are in the right place, the people on this can answer any questions you may have. M38A 1 is a different animal, there is a lot of difference between them and a Stock CJ 5, but there is also a lot the same. Good Luck

52 & 53 should have grill hinges. Looks like they were removed. Do you have the other parts that were removed?

Is the ignition coil contained within the distributor unit?

If original, kept as original yes it would be.

Check whats mounting the grill to the frame. We can see where the hinges were on the outer lower edge. The grill side are the same as CJ5 tailgate hinges. There were corresponding hinges mounting on the top of the frame rails.
The tub looks pretty nice. Definitely an early model from the screw-down battery lid. This should be a good project.

Interesting. I've never seen a '53 with the later center mounted grill. Could be '53 was a transitional year or you have a title from an earlier A1. Anyway, his frame is obviously setup for the hinges as is the grill so the hinges are missing and the only thing holding the grill on is the fender bolts. Easy to find and install and worth investing in because it makes it easy to drop the grill and pull the engine and trans all in one shot.

Agreed. I would keep it original but all that really matters is we keep them out of the crusher.
