62 Cj5 In Cypress, Tx;)

Hi, well, here I am in the build section. I'm dne' and the project is actually my brothers. I have the place, the tools, the desire. I'm retired and it's just something to keep me busy otherwise I'd go nuts not fixing something.
My brother (Robo) kept looking until he found something, may not be the best CJ, but it's Ok.
I have been looking at the idea of a V6, but find it just a little too much to do. This project when finished, will be just a beeboper around the neigborhood, go to the store, never on the major roads.

Supposedly the engine had been gone through a few years ago, new carb, didn't really get to drive it too much, but sounded ok.
I don't have a pic, but has the winch which comes off of the transfer case, you know, a driveshaft to run the winch. I think we could either do away with it, sell it and use for "other". However, it's unique~ we have time to think about that.



We drug it outside to pressure wash the undercarriage, but the crap was on so thick, it's going to be hell to make it look nice, but the tub will be removed soon and can take a better look.


I didn't think I'd ever use this bearing splitter again, but it got the steering wheel off and then I pulled the entire column. Just prepping to remove the tub/body.


I'd appreciate it is someone can interpret what the serial number means?


The pic below: I had posed this as an idea to my brother, though it wouldn't look exactly like it, it's just something to spur excitement. I'm a pretty good painter, and good at metal work, bodywork.

A question, but with tires like these, would the F engine be able to put the little jeep around, would tires/wheels like this even work? It's all imagination at this time

Ah, yes...the protective layer of crud. Amazing stuff really...grease/oil combined with dirt, run through thousands of heat cycles produces a nearly impervious layer of "protection". My combat weapons of choice (in order) are: Putty knife and old screwdriver, oven cleaner or degreaser then powerwasher. It kind of helps to pretend you are a paleontologist carefully un-earthing ancient artifacts.

I like how in your fist pic, the fire extinguisher is seemingly pre-positioned pointing directly at the engine bay...just in case

 

JMO - I would stay close to factory wheel and tire sizes with the F134. Here's a thread to look through - Old School Mud & Snow Tires And Vintage-look Radials

Thanks both Tims! I don't have pics, but the seller included some white spoke wheels (5) in not so good a shape with street tires on them(worn and dirty), but before my brother chunks them, we may need to take a closer look at their possibility; perhaps with some nice looking tires~ meh.
I have such mixed emotions on this "build" as my previous projects I want to be really nice, but in another way of thinking, clean it up as best reasonable, make it nice of course, shoot some army green on it and call it a day(based on a several months of work/play) sell it and get something better. My brother "robo"(may as well know his name) was intrigued by the Dauntless V6, but I'm not going there, he should have done his research and bought one already with the V6.

Darn it, it's just in my blood to take something worn and make it new! lol I have to say I'm excited to paint something again!

 

Dollar store, oven cleaner, let soak, scrape, brush, rinse, blow dry, repeat as necessary.

Good point Mike, ~ hm, colored steel wheels, that could be neat.
well, I have a couple hours, think I'll get the jeep up high on the maxjax and start tackling some body bolts!

 

The pinstripes on the wheels are very classy. This would look good on a CJ-5 too.

Hi guys! got the tub off, wasn't so bad; actually not much to it. I was just talking to Robo (brother), said may as well pull the engine/trans off the frame and focus on the frame. Just put the body on some casters for now and roll it out of the garage. Weather sure isn't going to do anything to it. I can't seem to post a picture and I'm a picture posting fool! lol

 

Nothing much to say other than Ta-da! I kind of like working on the jeep, relatively "easy". Maybe I'm speaking too quickly?

 

Ok, here's a question~ All I know is the engine was gone through a few years back, so says the previous owner. It runs, doesn't smoke. I could/can do a compression test and leak down to at least see how healthy the compression part is. But should I pull the pan/valve cover and just assume it wasn't gone through? If I go that far, should I pull rod caps/main caps to inspect, maybe even pull a piston? IF I get that far, I'm overhauling the engine! I'm confident in my skills, just don't want to go overboard.

Sounds good to me! One more question, perhaps the most important to me~ wiring harness? lights, turn signals, igniton? I want fuse box, not what is/was in it
