Flanged Dana 44 Help

    If I understand it correctly the retainer ring is the only thing that actually holds the axle in? Certainly wouldn't hurt to check things out.

    sorry not retainers but bearings. don't know why i said retainers

    here is a short video of the in and out (side to side?). what are some thoughts? The retainer plate does not look too badly dished but am still thinking of getting a new bearing, seal and retainer plate for this side. The passenger side does not move like that at all.

    the seal behind the plate does not move at all it is only the shaft.

    The bearing is pressed onto the shaft correct?

    If so, it seems to me that the pressed fit is compromised either by a bad bearing or a worn shaft in the area where the bearing seats.

    If I understand the setup correctly the retainer is what holds everything in.

    The retainer holds everything in the housing but I believe the bearing is a press fit onto the axle shaft. Not positive but I think so. Been a while.

    Assembly process would be to slip the retainer over the shaft, press the bearing onto the shaft, slide axle/bearing/retainer assembly into housing and bolt the retainer to the housing.

    wheelie, yes the bearing and a retainer ring gets pressed onto the axle after the retainer plate and seal

    this is a flanged axle and with that said are there aftermarket shafts available? I think i've heard something about dutchman axles?

    I agree the bearing wouldn't be just a slip fit.

    If the retainer is not loose then the only 2 possibilities I see are the bearing or the shaft. I'm not sure that, once it's all bolted in place, there would be enough room in the tube to allow a failed bearing to move THAT much. Unless the inner mating surface where the bearing contacts the shaft has worn. Or the shaft itself has worn in the same area. Poor quality bearings are not uncommon these days.

    Pull it apart and see what's up.

    This is my first thought.

    Maybe the wrong bearing and race was used and it didn't seat all the way.

    got the same bearings on both axles

    are there any specs for reference to see if the shaft is compromised?

    The instructions list the minimum diameter of the shaft where the retaining ring goes.

    Either the presses collar is loose or the bearing is junk just cause it has low miles it has been a few years. The grease may have dried up and ruined the bearing. I’d guess collar not pressed enough or bearing in wrong.
