Willys Pickup Gas Tank

Anyone know of a good donor for a gas tank on a Willys pickup? I'd hoped to use the rear tank out of our F150 donor truck but it's too big...

 

Repros are available, in plastic for sure. Metal too, IIRC.

Many years ago I made my own with a pair of freon cylinders.

 

Do you know how big they are?
They look tiny.

Bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas. The repop tanks I see are 14-15 gallons depending of which supplier you look at. He wants a bigger tank. Any thoughts? The you-pull junk yards around here don't sell gas tanks (they drill holes to drain the fuel) so my used options are somewhat limited. I'd like to find something that fits in the stock location behind the rear axle...it looks like the stock tank doesn't even go all the way across the width of the frame.

 

Look for one from a later jeep or a postal,there was a guy down south that had a lot of postal jeeps he parted out...not a clue of his name thou....maybe google postal parts

 

Do you need an in tank pump?

 

You can always just make one. This is the one I bent up from 0.090 5052 for a friend and his Willys wagon. IIRC, about 20 gallons.

 

If you guys don't mind, I'd consider being a third party in this endeavor. Shipping might be a bear but, I'm still looking for a tank for my '47 truck. My only concern is that the filler neck is correct in it's location and such so that it exits the body correctly and that it accepts the original style gas cap. I want a stock appearance in that respect. Increased capacity would be a plus. Also, I will be using the sack sending unit set up, I hope, so, no need for internal pump in my case.

 

Look through the Wagoneer forums for suitable donors. I presume you want to put the tank behind the rear axle, between the frame horns. A Bronco tank comes to mind. The later CJ tank would be a candidate too, available in the original 15 gallon size and a deeper 21 gallon size, if that is not too deep for the location.

Note that the Wagoneers and J-trucks are both candidates for this type of tank as a replacement or aux for the side-fill tank used originally. The Wagoneers have narrower frame rails at the rear; a search on the FSJ foprums would yield a variety of tank widths.

My J20 has a aux tank where the spare tire is normally. It's about 20 gallons. I could measure it, but it's aftermarket, welded up to fit the space. No idea what the brand is. Might be useful to compare frame widths between the newer and older trucks.

I recall from reading the forums that it's possible to fit a whomping 40 gal Suburban tank in the J-truck. This has the advantage of the factory in-tank sender/pump for EFI. http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=90413

 

I have an aluminum boat fuel tank for my Willys Wagon that fits like it was made for it. Its a stock size replacement tank. The filler tube is on the top, but near the side where it needs to be.
