FC150...No End In Sight Project

To get this pto running, whats it going to take?
New shifter shaft?
Does it always spin?
wouldn't make sense if it couldn't be disengaged

Dunno. That's just the way the widetrack FC150 was designed. The narrow tracks are just like a CJ-5.

 

You have the PTO that ran the winch. That rusty stub on the top is the lever that engages/disengages. The CJs had about 10" of lever that sticks up through the floor. Yours likely was either cable or linkage operated by the short stub. That stub should move front/rear.
Sometimes, bed mounted winches used a pair of sprokets, one on the PTO, and one on the winch, with a chain running to the winch. Any telling how the winch was powered off the PTO?
Don't worry about your springs, axles, of even brakes at this point. See if the engine and trans are going to be servicable. Check the engine block to be sure the core/freeze plugs look intact. Try to clean up the block and check for cracks. You folks get cold winters that can crack engine blocks if they are not either protected via antifreeze, or drained.
Try to figure out the shifting to see if everything works.
Then try to get it running, then moving.

Changed out trans and tcase fluid, 80w90.
Went to change engine oil. Motor is tight. Cant turn it over with a socket.
May move this thing on down the road.

I will pour some oil down the spark plug holes, give it a day, then try again to wrench it over?

Nope.

 

Must have been a gear on the back of the pto. I have the chain from the sprocket on the winch, but not sprocket on the pto. After some cleaning up, the little knob shifts fine to engage/disengage the PTO

 

Maybe time for an engine swap. What's a fantastic motor update for the t90 transmission?
4.3 is top of the list. Is this side shifting trans the same bellhouse as a normal t90?

 

Probably. I’ve looked at a column shift 2a and the Bell housing looked the same.

 

Put the 4.3 in your cj5 - then put that f-head into this fc...

 

where there would normally be a shifter knob, there is a cover.
this is due the FC cab location in respect to the transmission.
i can weld some plate steel to this to cover the holes, but id much rather buy a new cover. what is this part called? rock auto wasnt much help, neither was a general google search.

and i lucked out. the 1/4" plate the winch was sitting on was directly above this mess of a cover. thankfully there wasnt any water in the transmission, and the gearing looks all in tact.

 

Wow. You did get lucky if you've got holes like that in the trans cover, but no water in it. I'll be suprised if that cover is available new.

 

Maybe patch it? Ugly won't show.

Not saying your patch would be ugly. Mine would.

 

A flat piece of 1/16" or 1/8" plate with some silicone should be good enough? It should be a flat mating surface.

well, with this project, i figure no time like the present to bone up on my thin rusty sheet metal welding skills.
cleaned up with a wire wheel, and then weld, grind, repeat.
do you think silicone is a good idea? wouldn't RTV be better for this application?

 

RTV is silicone. (Room Temperature Vulcanizing silicone)
