ok went out to start jeep, tried to take off would not move. the day before i put new springs and felts in clutch bellcrank and put 3/4" spacer in between my trans crossmember and frame, so i thought maybe i messed up the adjustment for clutch messed with it all day adjusting in and out no go spent many hours on this site looking up clutch adjusting. bellcrank arm had lots of play in it so bout a new one so took 3 day to get new one. so while waiting for bellcrank was thanking the worst i need to replace my clutch. so bellcrank gets here today i put it on with all new parts nothing happens will not engage. upset i open up the top of trans to see if that was ok it was fine put back together start jeep still will not engage was shifting my tcase never had a 4 wheel drive jeep before. did not know that the tcase had to be in 2wh for the clutch to engage well now i know all that work and waisted days .every thing is shifting fine now . so make sure its in 2wh before you think something is wrong, so now on to exhaust. just thought i would put this out there. thanks

To be precise, the clutch engages regardless.

But the power is not applied to the driveshaft(s) by the transfer case output unless in 2H, 4H, or 4L.

In the spirit of transparency (hope I don't lose my man card for this:)) I did the same thing once. I had just finished building my 47 Willys, got in and fired it up. Put it in gear, let off the brake, let the clutch out and nada. Losing my mind thinking it was clutch related until i looked at the Tcase shifters.:-(
Put it in gear and I was off and runnin.:) It happens.:)

I do it most times after I have disconnected my flat tow....always a small panic with OMG what happened? Did I screw up the driveshaft when reconnecting etc...gone back under to ensure its good...finally realize the TC is in neutral.
