    Hi guys,

I have the weirdest intermittent starter issue. Also I replaced the starter and am still having the issue...

Basiclaly intermittently the stater wont engage. One slide in. I see the dip on the electrical meter but no click or anything. Any thoughts?

there are shims on the starter. Any chance that it just needs more of them, maybe??

thats all I can think of...

PS its a Oddfire V6. Slight update... Looks like some sort of resistance in the starting wires to the starter on/off stud on the starter. I'm able to jump start it by touching that wire to the positive. Every time. So not a shim issue.

If the starter runs when you jump the battery directly to the starter, it's not the starter.

This is a Delco or Prestolite starter? Did you replace the solenoid too? Picture of starter would help.

Could be a bad wire or connection from the switch to the solenoid.

Be it known that delco starters had intermittent failures because deteriorating connections and factory undersized wire was to fault. If you run another wire (preferably) 10 ga. along with your existing wire that goes from the start term (ign sw) down to the starter solenoid (S) terminal that will solve your problem.

    I agree.
I have had intermittent starting before and it has always been the multi-pin wire connector on the firewall that had a bad connection. I would simply unplug it then plug it back together and it will start. If I don't start it for some time it will happen again, I need to clean the contacts in the plug and then coat them with some anti oxidant electrical grease.
See the arrow in the picture below for the connection that I am referring to.

I agree with Ozfin. Had the same intermittent starting issues on my '67 Jeepster. All wires to the multi-pin connector looked fine. Wasn't until my buddy wiggled the wires as I turned the ignition did we discover the problem. I just pulled the connector off and connected the wires individually. No more problem after that.
