When I did my gears, the PO had glued the spindle on with about a half gallon of blue permatex. It took some serious whacks with a rubber mallet and some gentle persuasion with a screwdriver to get mine loose.

I put the 3 jaw gear puller on there and it comes off maybe half an inch then if I back the bolt off it goes back into place where it was. It’s come off a little ways but not very far.

Your brake shoes are hanging up on the drums. Try backing off the adjuster first (star adjuster inside the little peep hole in the bottom of the backing plate). After that, if they are still hanging up, try try turning he drum as you pull it.

I got the drum off no problem, it’s the hub the lug bolts go through I can’t get off

I’ve been trying to upload a photo to show you what I’m talking about but it says it’s too large.

 So what is the inventory of parts you removed? All of the lockout hub or drive flange assembly should be off, and as Daryl stated, in this order, you should have removed the big outer nut, the lock washer that was probably mutilated, the inner nut, and another smaller washer. The only thing I could imagine having any "spring" to it as you pull on it would be the inner washer getting caught on the spindle threads, but even that seems unlikely.
If that washer (and the bearing?) has been removed, maybe it's just the inner grease seal hanging up?

Without pics, these are just wild guesses. I hope you can figure it out.

Inner bearing hanging up on some corrosion or other material on the spindle? If the nuts and washers are off, it will come off.

unless the snapring is still on the nub of the axle.

I removed the nut I assume is the inner one, it was a 2” OD and it didn’t have the outer nut on it for some reason which should be smaller and would’ve been in the dust cap right? Also I don’t see a washer in there anywhere but I may be mistaking it for the bearing:shrug:

Do you have locking hubs and if so what kind?

You should have a snap ring on the end of the axle shaft to keep the shaft from moving in and out. You don't really need it, so don't worry if it's missing - about half the Jeeps we saw at the Jeep dealer in the '70s were missing the snap rings. The factory hubs have a large outer nut that's held in place by a lock washer that is bent over one flat of the nut. Outer nut, bendy flat washer that's keyed into the spindle, another identical nut, another keyed washer, outer bearing, hub, inner bearing, seal.

Some locking hubs use a different set of parts.

There are lots of videos on YouTube concerning wheel bearing replacement. You might want to check one just to make sure you're on the right track.

A video with any CJ front axle will basically have the same hub parts to reference from, aside from drum vs disc brakes.

I found my problem. there indeed is a washer I was confusing for the bearing and once I pulled it out I found another nut. So what size is the nut and where do I find a socket that will fit?

Just saw your last post....you can order a spindle nut socket. I have a 1" drive set of socketd. Not sure what exact size I used but it was big...2 or 2 1/4 range. It fit nicely. It was one of the largest sockets I have.

    Bowbender I'm workin' on it!

I believe it is a 2 5/16" socket, you might find one at your local parts store. I ended up getting mine on line. You can back them out with a cold chisel or punch if you have to. Place chisel on corner of nut and tap turning the nut backwards. Not really the recommended way but should work. I did it that way when I was a kid, and the previous owner did it to my JEEP. The nuts were pretty hacked up so I replaced them.

You don't need a quality socket to remove the spindle nuts. Usually the one made of round tubing with 6 flats stamped on one end work fine. You are only snugging hand tight.

I got it off of there. Wasn’t all that tight and backed off after one hit with the hammer and screwdriver. Got the spindle and one piece of the axle out. The Rest of it is down where it goes in the side gears so what’s the easiest way to get the clip that’s supposed to hold the shaft in place out?

No clip. The shaft just floats in there. Get the spindle off, and the shaft will pull out. I can't remember where you said it was broken, but you might need a strong magnet on a stick to get the broken piece out.

That is the one I have - works fine...its thin wall so its easy to fit inside the hub...needs a 1/2" drive iirc.
