Spare Tire Carrier: Side Or Rear?

The modern incarnation of the CJ to this day (is it still called the Wrangler?) still carries a full size spare, is that true?

I've never seen a comparably sized temporary spare ("donut") on a Jeep or anything larger than a sedan but it would be neat to explore the idea, especially if it is side mounted and lower profile/not as obtrusive. Older Land Rovers often carried a spare on the engine bonnet but again these were I guess old bias-ply "pizza cutters".

At least on the back the spare is acting as a bumper of sorts.

I use a M38 tailgate with the factory reinforcements for the spare tire and fuel can mount. The side mount needs some work the quarter panel is ripped and is bent.

I tried that once. Was immediately told by a cop that it obstructed my lights and was a no-no.

What plans do you have for your Jeep? How do you use it? Where do you go with it?

This jeep will do modest trail rides like the White Rim and various trails in Colorado. I love the look of the side mount, however, I can build a bumper and swing out carrier pretty easily. Right now, I need to lower it and get a soft, flexible suspension. The tailgate is highly desired and useful. I'm just concerned about the hurting the sheet medal.

    Just for the record-

A stock CJ is 59" wide.

A stock CJ with a 7.5 x 16 spare bolted to the side is 67" wide.

A stock JK is 74" wide.

A JK with idiotically large tires is .., well ...

    ... well is wider yet.

So if you go with side spare, what do you do for spare jerry can?

If your looking for stock, stick with the side.
    I prefer the swing out.

I have zero rattles. You can see the toggle clamp and rubber bumper that keeps everything tight. No bolts to remove, flip the latch and swing it open.

Mount the jerrycan on the side or on top of one of the rear fender wells!

I'm with the no spare crowd. Slime, plug kit, compressor. Oh and a can of zippo fluid and grill lighter if you need to set the bead

Put me in the no spare club too. I have a great original Hi-Lift jack that my Dad gave me. I want to mount it on the CJ, but I don't want to mount the spare. So I'm thinking, why have a jack without a spare...Wait! Maybe I need it to aid in fixing or plugging as described by Rich?

I'm a no spare Joe........around town. I took one on the trail when it was more serious stuff and farther from home. I don't drive it that often, let alone wheel it much anymore. I've only had 1 flat tire in my life that I can recall. Knock on wood.

Here is a good reason to have it on the rear - prevents backflips!

This is what I have been building, I have it on my CJ8 and on my LJ. Piviots and sits on the bumper. I am going to use the same thing on my CJ6; P1010689 resized.jpg P1010690 resized.jpg

It can carry two of the Rotopax 4 gallon or 4 of the the two gallon size cans or storage boxes. I built brackets the hold it tight to the body with T bolts up near the top of the tub to keep it from rattling.
