Can a regular pto drive shaft with a universal joint in the center run from the bell housing to the pto? Or do I need the special short drive shaft and bell housing with the hanger bearing on the side like the M38A1 use? This is on a early CJ5.

Not 100% sure what you're asking but i run a two piece shaft with a ujoint in the middle supported by a hanger bearing I have bolted the the lower left engine-bellhousing bolt.

I have found a pro off a M38A1. I should have posted that first. These are pictures of the drive shaft set up.

OK, I could be wrong on all this, but that sure looks like the rare PTO from the M series jeeps (both M38 and the A1). You could easily sell that and fund all sorts of winch fantasies.

The civvy Koenig and Ramsey PTOs are very easy to find and purchase in comparison to that PTO.

Yup that's what it is but I believe the really rare part is the model 50 winch that goes with it- last I heard they're going for upwards of $1000.

Yeah that's it but I didn't pay no were near $1000 for it. But it does need to rebuilt with new bearings and seals. I just need to find a low profile ujoint that goes beside the PTO.

Really they are going for that much? Is that not rebuilt or rebuilt with new bearings and seal?

The winches by themselves certainly are, the PTO's seem to be more common for some odd reason & therefore not worth so much.

The ramsey 105a is easily worth $1000 not rebuilt. The last one i sold years ago i got $1000 for it.

Well I have the replaced the ball bearings and seals. I also have the bell housing with the stud hanging out of the side for the hanger bearing.
