Engine And Gear Train Removal

Discussion in 'Flat Fender Tech' started by william_cj3b, Feb 26, 2017.

?

Remove as an assembly or separate?

  1. Pull it all together

  2. Pull the trans & t-task separately

  3. Pull the body instead and embark on a major restoration that lasts at least a decade

Help me decide. 1954 3B, stock w/ overdrive. I seem to remember some difficulty with clearance around the steering box or battery tray when pulling as an assembly, but it's been ten years and my memory is foggy at best on anything more than 5 minutes ago.

I have an engine hoist and leveling sling. I do not have a transmission jack.

    Sorry, '54 3B. 100% stock except Warn o/d.

Repairs needed - Engine overhaul, T90 synchros, D18 intermediate shaft/bearings.

If you haven't already started pull the whole thing at once, including removing the radiator and grill.

That was my train of thought. I just have a nagging memory of some kind of interference.

I'll get started as soon as I can get the darned t-case shifters off!

You are definitely correct in the thinking about the battery tray and the steering box making it crowded. The steering is pretty much in the way even just pulling the engine though. Might want to unbolt it and see if it will drop out of the way, or maybe pull it up and over away from the engine.

Assuming you still have the generator try removing it first and that should help with battery tray clearance.

Generator is off and dropping the column and box is doable, it needs sector bushings anyway.

Still fighting the shifter pin right now :ninja:

Way easier to pull all together. Gives you a chance to clean everything up and get a good look at all those old bones out in the light.
