Hollbrook Springs Vs Rocky Road Yj Spring Swap Vs Home Brew Yj Spring Swap

Tarry, I am planing on putting the jeep on the scales when I get my swing out spare tire carrier completed. I don't want to make any suspension mods until I get the weight back there.

 

I installed rubicon express springs on my 2A. Cheap, fine ride quality and I like them. 100 bucks a pack for the YJ 4" lift ones. It rides like a jeep. Handles like a jeep. I have no complaints.

 

I used a kit from a now out of business company for the front, it included a shackle reversal and new wider hangers for the rear of the front springs. I just ordered Wrangler spring hangers from Quadratec for the rear. My Jeep is over in storage but I will try to get over there and snap some pics.

 

I had the shackle reversal. (Factory installed M38a1.) I converted back to CJ style when I did the Rocky Road conversion. This conversion is so much safer. I would not do a shackle reversal ever again.
As for the Rocky Road conversion. It is expensive, but if you was a really soft ride. Old Man Emu Springs are awesome. Very soft Springs. I found 3 1/2 " Sua is not very tall for offroad use.

Thank you for chiming in. What springs were in your jeep before the Rocky road conversion? Were they lift springs or stock?

 

I had 2 1/2" stiff Ranco Spring. I took out a leaf that helped. Still was not as soft as the Old Man Emu Springs.

 

With the exception of the M38 shackle reversal, I am currently set up exactly the same as you were before your yj swap.
Would you mind giving us a 3 year update? Are you still happy with the Yj springs? Have you noticed much settling? Did you end up installing a sway bar?

 

Yes. I'm still happy with the set up.
I don't need a sway bar. There is some body roll in the corners, but not that bad.

I don't mean to be a pest, I had considered just PM'ing you my questions, but is seems like other guys want to know the same things that I do.
Are you still only running a front tank, or have you added a rear tank? Would it be possible for you to measure the distance between the springs at the rear shackles?

The rear YJ springs are the same length as the original springs and use the same mounts.
I use only a front tank. I would assume a rear tank wouldn't be a problem with the wider rear springs.

 

OK just so every body understands my Jeep is a weekend project and progress is Very Slow.
My Jeep has not been rolling on it's own power for 6 years.
I have bought the Old Man Emu springs CS037R and used on all four corners. They advertise them as lite I think.
Kind of silly the CS036R are the same spring rate just more arch.
I knew of the Rocky Road that Scott used but I chose to make my own from Ruff Stuff hangers.
I'm posting now to try and clear up some of the questions I have seen here.
First off I set my springs inside edge to the same width as the stock springs.
The OME springs are 2.35" wide for some reason. Not 2.50" like I thought.
I used 2.75 wide fixed hangers from RS and two Energy Suspension kits 2.2119G bushing sets.
The bushings measure wide so I sanded the inside edges to keep from bottoming out on each other at all four corners.
The upstanding leg measures .25" and I sanded them to .20" wide on the fixed hanger side only.
(.20+.20+2.35=2.75 fixed hangers).
I used the custom shackle hanger width of 2.35" and 3/8" X 4" shackles.
Then bolted the shackles with home made 9/16" grease-able bolts and 3/4" center bolts with 1" X 1/8" wall DOM tubing rather than just welding tubing.
Even when using 1/2" bolts I think there would be a clearance problem.
I had to trim the edges of my rear gas tank skid plate and push in a brand new gas tank near the rear shackles for clearance.(Shackle nuts)
I have finished the install less the bump stops that I plan on adding after other things are done.
I'm sure I will be asked questions.
I plan on working with Kyle on this and making the info with some pictures a little clearer.
