Rear Disc Brake Conversion.

I started this today. While removing the Rear Locking Hubs I found this one destroyed.

This came out of my hub.

Should look like this.

 

I think Warn will replace that. That thing sure did come apart.

 

I also installed a factory M38A1 Parking Brake Handle. This should work well with the rear caliper parking brake.

Yes. Even being broken it still worked. I just don't know when I broke it.

Rotor.


Have to machine the rotor to reduce it to 6.60. inch. That it will hub will fit the rotor.

 

Hubs are at the Machinist getting machined.

I contacted Warn. Looks Like I maybe able to get free replacement locking hubs.

 

I wanted to let every one know. This Kit from SSBC is for a 70-75 CJ5. I doesn't fit early CJ's. Modification is required. Also I have a Warn Full Floater Set up.

 

What calipers are those? Caddy? I've kept my parking brake handle and have always been planning for disc brakes on the back, I'm looking forward to see how you hook the cables up...

 

No idea what they are. The kit has terrible instructions. They don't even supply bolts to hold the caliper on.

 

I have the brackets installed. I'm still waiting for the hubs to be machined. (Note. I did have to drill two more holes to make these fit.)

 

1978 eldorado calipers?

 

There should be a casting number on the calipers. If you could look for that, it will cross-reference to the GM catalog. SSBC could also probably tell you what they're from.

Might be important to know if you ever need replacement parts out in the boonies...

 

I was looking at the SSBC web site and their installation instructions for this kit. Based on the information for replacement brake pads (FMSI#: D-347), the parts appear to be Ford.

After looking at the SSBC literature, I would have contacted their support department. Their advertisement says the kit includes all hardware. May not have been worth the effort although things like that make me wonder if any other items were left out of the kit. You certainly know better than I how it effected your installation.

 

Machine the hubs to fit the rotors.
Drill two holes to match the axle flange of the early axle.
Also need longer wheel studs.

 

More problems. SSBC didn't supply the metric bolt that mount the calipers. I need four 12x1.75x35 8.8 bolts. I also found the spacers weren't supplied right. There wasn't enough 1/2" hole spacers and to many 3/8" spacers.
Today I went to install the longer wheel studs. I found that when I install the wheel suds the hub grows. Now the hubs don't fit the rotor.



Back to the machinist.

 

In my world, it's three strikes and you're out SSBC. I did the same disc conversion on the rear (with a Warn FF already done) as I did on the old D27. Same parts exactly for a little over $300. I checked out SSBC before, but their prices were a deal killer for me.

 

Hope it all works out, not much of a "kit", in my most humble opinion. You'll get it done though.
