They go into the water jackets. Forgot about that. Use the locking side of the zip tie and "hook" it inside to find the bottom of the threads where it opens up into the jacket. Mark the zip tie where it hooks and measure that.

5.75 inches. Get that length of a bolt?

Is that with the head on?

I'll let someone else chime in. I have a redneck, just-get-it-running, farmer-Joe mentality when it comes to these old engines, and my opinions would probably be frowned upon by the purists.

5.75 inches from the underside of the threading in the block, to the top surface of the head. I have been a stickler on just about everything except for this. I've drove it (and fixed it) more this past summer than I have since I've owned it, and that's been 15 years. I just want to drive it!

Why???? You haven't "snapped" any bolts yet - and you won't, if you keep those hardened Grade 8s.

But you may strip out a bunch more holes unless you replace them all with the right length.

No point to heli-coiling any more than you have to * but * I'd be concerned the other holes may have threads damaged and weakened by those too-short bolts being torqued close to the limit.

Bolts are 4.5" long....1/4" longer than the 4.25" long bolts. NEW, new one is 6". if that dont bite, then its helicoil time.

Helicoil is 22 cents. the wrench to install it is 22 bucks....w....t...f....

    Google? Ebay? Amazon?

Try any of them, it took me less than 30 seconds to find full kits for $20

I'd call that a bargain compared to an hour of machine shop time. Or a new engine block.

Why would Costco have a torque wrench analyzer? The ones near me don't even have torque wrenches in the tool section.

Picked up the helicoil kit. no directions or drill bit included.
    1. everything i read indicates a 29/64" bit. true?
    2. how deep do i sink the helicoil in the block?

Helicoils come in a few different lengths, so it depends on what length you got. Some are only about 3/8" long, others about 1/2" long, and finally about 5/8" long. Two shorter helicoils can be stacked, but you must remove the drive tang from the deeper one before you start the second one. It also takes some careful calculations to get the stacked height correct. You ultimately want the top coil end just flush with the head gasket surface.

It's been a few years since I built an Fhead. I believe there should be a counterbore in the block of a certain depth void of threads. Not sure how deep this is. Should be able to measure a good hole. The helicoil shouldn't be flush with the top of the block due to the pull of the bolt. It will pull the insert above the surface. Even if there is no counterbore in the block, I would install the insert at least one thread deeper then flush.
