I'm Welting! I'm Welting!

Last time I painted the jeep was before this interweb silliness so I didn't have a good source of welting. If JC whitney didn't have it, I didn't have a source for it. SO I used a piece of self-adhesive weather stripping. Now almost 20 years later I bought the hood welting kit from Herm.

Now I know this is a simple task but I thought would document it anyway.

First I stripped off the weather stripping which of course scratched up the paint. Also I had to drill out some of the original holes for attaching the welts with rivets. You can see here that some of the holes in the reinforcing around the headlight areas did not line up correctly with holes in the outer layer of sheet metal. It was like this from the factory, but I believe wire brads were used to attached the original welting, so perfect holes weren't needed.


Next I masked and primed to repair the scratched up paint


I have a can of the Ford "SE" touch up paint kept handy in the garage. It is not as durable as the original paint I have but it will do in a pinch

Herm's kit came with 48" of the welting and (12) 3/16"x.50" aluminum pop rivets. My jeep actually needs 14 rivets but I had extras already in my mounds of hardware. I started in the middle and worked towards the outside. I used a 1/8" drill to punch the needed holes in the welting, match drilling the holes as I went along, pulling the welting just a tad snug as I worked my way to the outside edges. The pop rivets pull down tight enough to be well below the top ridges of the new welting.




The 48" inches of welting was about 2" more than required. The welting works & looks a lot better than the rubber weather stripping.




Hood fits snugly, feels just right when I put on the hood catches.

 

HAHAHAH. I literally just opened up my welting shipped from Walcks. I used rubber self adhesive flashing as well! So funny. Like that blue.

 

Did your kit come with the pops?

Weren't the originals held with bi-furcated rivets? The tangs would sink into the welt and not rub on the hood?

 

The rivets came with Herm's kit , they pull down tight enough to clear the hood easily

 

Mine came with the bifurcated rivets.

 

I think I got mine from Kaiser-Willys . but that was a long time ago . looks good

 

What size are the rivets?

The original welting was held with wire clips.
