    Hi,
I am trying to remove the console from my 71 Commando with a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, and I need to get the trans shift knob off without breaking anything. The manual shows that the outer shift knob should simply unscrew; mine doesn't! It unscrews but does not lift-off. The center button remains in place. Is there a hidden set screw or special technique to remove the knob? A page from the manual is attached.
    Thank you.

The one shown is the early style, yours is the later. The center button is threaded and just unscrews like the outer, nothing special. Sometimes you need a pair of pliers to loosen it initially, good idea to wrap a rag around it to keep from gouging it.

Thank you very much. That totally solved the issue. I had critters in my console and they ate parts of the owners manual!

Reminds me of the Triumph TR6 I bought a couple of years back. Started it up and blew what was left of the nest, three dried up baby mice and the mother out the tailpipe :).
