I actually use the hoist to drop the tranny/t-case. I run a chain around the tranny and to the hook on the chainhoist, then hook a ratchet strap from the chain to the rear of the tranny or t-case so I can set the angle of the input shaft when I put it back in. I was trying to find some pics of the setup but my photobucket account is messed up at the moment.

Technically the 180 Turbo would be the Corsa engine as it's the only thing it came in. The 140 4 carb came standard in the Corsa but was available in the Monza and 500 also.

Rod bearings & journals are officially toast, less than 300 miles.

    Haven't checked the mains yet.

Don't want to thing about the cam right now (again)

If it was a "professional" rebuild, do you have a warranty claim?

Crank able to be turned to another undersize? Didn't you have a spare crank squirreled away too?
When you pull the rod caps, do you have to kind of pry the bearing out, or does it just fall out, loose?
If the bearings are still snug in the rod and cap ends, chances are your big ends are still good. If the bearings are loose and just fall out, that's usually a good indication of needing the big ends resized.

I know the mains are at minimums, not sure about the rod journals. I haven't had a good look at the whole thing, just dropped the caps but I can feel grooves in the journals, The # 3 looks like there was sand going through it.

I do have a spare crank, I'll have to get it mike'd to se what sort of shape it's in.

Mickey- FWIW I was investigating why I have a knocking sound under load and a certain rpm range. My oil pressure has dropped from 60 when I put it all back together to 10, as the rpm comes up it goes up to 30 but goosing the throttle there's a lag in the pressure coming up & between 13 to 20 psi I get the knocking, see post 7 in your noise thread.

Can anyone tell me the clearance spec for the caps/bearings to the side of the rod journals? I've got between .010 - .019" of space there, there's an appreciable amount of back & forth movement of the rods on the crank.

OK, got he spare crank checked out- mains are 2.312 on all 3, rods are 1.900/1.902.

I see that .040 under size bearings are available (actually down to .060) for the rods but the FSM only recommends down to .030".

Opinions please- is taking the rod journals down further ok or is it going to bite me on the Eh Are Ess Eee??

Removing metal past .030 could lead to crankshaft breakage. My rod journals are at .040 iirc. Fwiw if you put a sbc 400 crank in a 305/350 you have to take .200 off the mains.

Is this your 134? If so and you drive it respectively it should last OK..........I haven't read all of what happened other than Oil and lubrication seems to be at odds........I would sure want to correct that before moving forward......

If you opt to take the rods out to .050 or .060, have the shop leave a large radius at the sides of the journal. You may have to chamfer the edges of the bearings, but the radius keeps some strength in the crank. Though not optimal, you will likely be OK.

Got the news back from my mechanic today- the crank is officially toast but the spare one is re-usable. Also the pistons (which were new) are gonners. Gonna cost $1400 for the work at the machine shop, their official position is that the damage was due to dirt in the engine.

    Which there was.

That they left there the first time they worked on it.

But there wasn't after the second time they worked on it.

Because by then I had learned my lesson & cleaned to whole damn thing out myself.

Maybe I'll have it back together for the long weekend, maybe not.

Howard, save yourself some grief and buy one of these-assuming you can in that other country.

    Search Results For "transmission jack"

Most of them will work for at least several installations and sometimes they even last decades. I have an older one that looks like the second one but is rated at 2000 lbs. No problem picking up the end of a Jeep with it.
