You do know this is all your fault don't you? Your recent HEI conversion motivated me to do this. :D

I was going to just drive the Jeep while things were good but decided to day to go ahead with a new harness and condenser. They've changed a little bit, the new unit is pretty robust. I installed it and completed another successful drive about town.

Old left (with many repairs) - New right with a redesign.

Back to the carb rebuild...I am not an expert at all with carbs...did you find it easy to do?

Either am I...It was gravy! Take your time.

I'm great at taken things apart and putting them back together. I don't always understand how things function but if you put things where they go and adjust them to spec and tweak if necessary you should be fine. I totally encourage you to look up Mikes Caburator and follow his videos.

Thanks. Yes, i did check out the site and watched the videos of the rebuild. I like tinkering with things too to figure out how they tic. I am just contemplating the time, effort, frustration, etc...vs the $300 instead with a bolt on product. Just figuring the Time vs Money factor. I know it will run much better with a carb build, so just looking at options. Plus some of the vacuum lines i think are not set up right from the PO, but the 198 has limited documentation. I sure would like to find some resources for this rare motor.

I put a Weber 2-bbl on my 134 and they stated to do this a little differently for the first setup. They say to back out the idle mixture screw 1.5 turns, start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature. Once it gets there, turn the idle speed (not mixture) adjustment down until the engine barely runs and then adjust the idle mixture screw for the best idle at this speed. Once this is done, bring the idle speed up to 900 rpm and you are done. I had some popping going on when I was done and found out that the issue was due to retarded timing. My timing mark was not in the right place on the crankshaft pulley. I made a new mark by determining top dead center on piston 1 and adjusted the timing and things were fine. I made the mark to find out where TDC was and adjusted the timing by ear/performance, using this as a reference.

Does your carb have an accelerator pump, and is it adjustable? Mine is progressive but not adjustable. No need to as it works fine. I had to change the size of the idle jet, but once I did, it was great.

I could be blowing smoke, but give it a shot, huh?

    Later...

P.S. OK, I guess I should have checked to see that you already have the problem solved. I am fm Utah and illegitimate, so I can't read...

Focker, did you notice much performance change with the HEI upgrade?

I can't say, but I enjoy not having to perform maintenance on a points distributor. My carb and timing is dialed in and my Jeep performs very well.

Just anything on the 198 motor itself. Diagrams, maintenance, repair info, etc.

You can buy repair manual at DIY repair manuals/1962/skylark or special-- chassis repair manual--$95.00. What I have came from "Buick.net"
