Electric fuel pump

I'm thinking of switching to an electric fuel pump. Besides the ground wire , where is the best power source to run the power lead so it only runs when ignition is on? Hopefully someplace under the hood so I don't have to crawl under the dash. Thanks, Bob

You could run it from the switch side of the ballast if you had to. Another option would be the feed wire for the backup lights. Either way I'd run that to a relay to power the pump to keep the amp draw down though. Any particular reason to run an electric?

Mostly to clean up the engine bay and remove clutter. I'm anal that way. Also which side of the ballast is the switch side?

PO of my ECJ5 with V6 ran an electric pump using the feed wire to the back-up light switch. Seemed to work well although I went back to mechanical pump and have back up lights as well. I carry the electric pump has a back-up and had to use it once. Was pretty easy to move the wire back to the pump temporarily for the quick field repair.

The side that doesn't have the wire going toward the coil.

If you're going to be wheeling in situations where rolling is a possibilty you might want to consider installing a "rollover" switch to cut power to the pump in case you end up upside down- keeping the pump squirting fuel into a hot engine compartment in that case can be downright embarrassing. :(

Which side of the ballast is kind of a crap shoot after 40+ years. If memory serves me the right side is from the switch but best to disconnect one side or the other and go from there.

I ran a cheapo parts store electric on mine forever with good result. I had a hidden toggle switch for mine under the dash as an added security feature and powered it from my switched source on my fuse panel..

I was going to use a low pressure safety switch wired in to kill the power when oil pressure drops but I may need to find a wiring diagram that shows how to wire that into a line using an relay as part of the fuel pump wiring.

When wiring my pump, it says run a wire to ignition. Can I just run it to the solenoid on the post marked I for ignition to avoid crawling under the dash. Or do you guys have a better idea? Bob
